Emerald Inn — Hotel in Maplewood

I called on a room very early Saturday morning for immediate occupancy. I was out later than I expected, had a long drive home and didn't want to risk driving as I was extremely tired. I chose Emerald as it was a very short drive from my location. Max, the person who was the night clerk, answered the phone promptly and courteously. The room was about two stars. You could tell from the odor that it had recently been painted. The carpet was rather stiff under my feet. It was apparent that it has recently been shampooed. Aesthetically, the room looked trashed. The curtains were barely hanging on the rod; there was a night stand that was missing a handle and looking extremely "beat up". However, the bed was EXTREMELY comfortable; the sheets were clean; the pillows in great shape. Despite the "condition" of the other furniture, the room was clean, as well as the bathroom; there were ample clean, new towels, toilet paper, etc. On any other night, I would more than likely have requested a different room. I'm glad I didn't. The bed was so comfy; the hotel and surrounding area was quiet. I slept like a rock. Max offered me a late check out of noon rather than 11 a.m. which was quite helpful. The lobby was decorated nicely; was clean and inviting. Upon leaving, the day clerk was smiling and courteous. There was fresh, hot, strong coffee with real half and half provided (the real half and half is definitely a plus for this slightly high maintenance chick). All in all, I believe I would stay here again. My reasons for a re-visit include: curiousity, as to what management will do next to improve their property; I was impressed by their effort that was evident in my short stay. We arrived at 2:00 am. As expected, there wasn't anyone waiting at the front. We rang the bell twice before someone showed up to check us in. The person that helped us was nice. We were in room 119.||||In the morning, our toilet became plugged. We didn't have too much toilet paper to cause the plug, After it went down, I had to hold down the flush lever the entire time. Their shower pressure and water temp was fine. They have the pattern on the Bottom of the shower that looks like it would be trip resistant. It is not. It is slippery. There was rush around the overflow drain. They only provide two little containers if shampoo. They are difficult to squeeze to get the shampoo out. I ended up turning them upside down in a cup to get enough out to wash my hair.||||The next day, the toilet plugged again and did not flush down. Someone repaired it quickly.||||Next problem is the pass cards to get to your room. They were continually not working. We would take it to get programmed again. It was several times each day we had to get these cards reprogrammed because they would work once then not work. They didn't work on the back entry door. Very frustrating when you need to use the bathroom and you can't get in.||||The bed was not great and the pillows were not great. The heater in the room was nice after it heated up the room. The hotel lobby was very clean and smelled great. The staff member that checked me in was very polite and answered all my questions. The motel rate was extremely fair considering they dont charge a deposit when u pay in cash or credit/debit. I asked for a smoking room which is hard to find these days. The elevator up to the 4th floor was quiet and clean. My room was clean and there was a flat screen samsung tv, mini fridge, microwave, table and 2 chairs, a sitting chair, king size bed with 2 end tables. The bathtub was bigger than most ive seen at other motels and deep. Yes, the furniture was a bit out dated but who really cares about that? I dont! The bed was comfortable and there is direct tv with all the movie channels. They have a laundry room thats open from 6am to 10pm that cost 1.50 to wash and 1.50 to dry. Theres a soda machine, vending machine that are both reasonably priced as well as an ice machine that is free. U are able to check in as early as 11am and check out is also at 11am. As far as i have seen there are NO motels that let u check in at 11am, its always 2-4pm. It was very quiet there. The loudest thing i heard was some idiot out in the parking lot blasting his subs around 3am. It didnt last long and then whoever it was left. I was very impressed and give the Emerald inn 5 stars!
