Overall, for lunch, I enjoyed the restaurant. I ordered their lunch special Hameroo sandwich (ingredients in one of my photos here). I liked the sandwich and it was packed with flavor. The Donckers mac & cheese side wasn't bad, but I was hoping for an equally punchy flavor as the sandwich. Don't get me wrong; I enjoyed the m&c, but it wasn't the stand out I was expecting.
It was packed for the lunch time and, as a first timer, I was at a bit of a loss. There are menus near the door. When a register is free, you place your order and, if staying in, are given a numbered rock to sit on a table until your food is delivered. Seating was limited, but it was a busy time of day when I arrived. The staff were very nice and helpful despite the rush.
Downstairs (ground level) is a candy shop with a nice selection of fine looking chocolates. They're a bit expensive, but the coconut haystack I had was very tasty. It's kind of nice to get candy in the UP that isn't another generic fudge chain of stores, so I don't mind an upcharge if it's truly a small-batch shop.
I'd be interested to try some of their creative-sounding breakfast meals. I'd enjoy it more at a less busy time, I think, but I'm willing to give Donckers another try next time I'm in the area. If you want to try a unique sandwich and don't mind a bit higher cost, give...
Read moreDonkers is three places in one: candy shop, ice cream parlor, and restaurant.
1️⃣ candy shop NEVER disappoints. Chocolate rocks were a favorite when the kids were young. There is something for everyone AND you can buy just one—if you can’t make a bigger commitment. 2️⃣ ice cream! A variety of flavors AND you can build your own sundae. I love a classic banana split, but here I can totally customize the experience. 3️⃣ the restaurant, which is more like a diner. Chips, no fries. A pickle on every plate. The service was good. One person took our order, another person brought it to the table, another gave us the check.
I had the Rueben—they were out of 1000 island—I made due but it wasn’t the same. The pre-portioned meat did not remotely go to the edges of the bread. With the heap of bread in the middle—the bread was only grilled in the center—the meatless outer section had melted Swiss and remnants of coleslaw. I probably should have gone with my second choice—the BLT.
The spicy mac and cheese was good.
We did not get refills on water—probably because of the rotating table service.
It is family friendly, great views from almost any table, they have some tables outside. It is a Marquette landmark and...
Read moreMy friend and I visited early Saturday morning and had a short wait before being seated. Waited 15 min for our server to come over where she didn’t even acknowledge the wait or introduce herself.
The coffee was terrible tasting which was disappointing since we expected to have some flavored. Overheard the table next to us complaining about their food to each other and they left with over 3/4ths of theirs plates left with food on it. The other table complained about waiting 50 min. It was busy but out of the 6 tables by us, there were only 3 of us seated and none of the waitresses seemed like they were rushing or in a hurry.
After a 40 min wait, our food arrived. My eggs weren’t cooked at all and when I pointed this out to our waitress, she told me she’d speak with a a manger. The manager never even came by to apologize and the waitress never did either. She offered to comp $3 off a $12 meal and I accepted since I did not want to wait another 40 min for the food.
Very disappointed and it seemed that many others that day were too. Would not return and would...
