Artisen Gelato — Restaurant in Matthews

Very disappointed with lack of communication as my son had an allergic reaction while eating the gelato there. My son has a dairy allergy. We went yesterday for the first time. He was excited to be able to choose from so many flavors. I asked if everything was dairy free due to his allergy. I was assured it was all dairy free and safe for him to have. He chose the vanilla with chocolate chunks in it,( their version of cookies and cream). After about 5 bites he started to say his throat hurt and was itchy and started coughing. I made him stop eating and right away went to the car to get Benadryl. By the time I got back which was seconds, he had hives on his face and was coughing a lot more and saying his throat feels funny. I gave him Benadryl and his symptoms started to get better. I went to the counter and asked are they sure everything was dairy feee as he was clearly having a reaction. Again the lady assured me it was all dairy free and no milk. I left bc at that point I was more worried about my son than the ingredients at that moment. I then got home and emailed them to see if I could get a list of the ingredients and still have not heard anything 24t hours later. Today, I visited the ice cream shop with my mother and daughter. Unfortunately, the employee there was not in the best mood and did not seem happy to be serving customers. I asked for a few samples, but my daughter disliked them, so I sought more options. However, the woman informed me that she couldn’t provide additional samples due to the store policy on limited sampling. I pointed out that it seems counterproductive to limit samples, especially since I had already made a purchase and all their flavors are so distinct, making it hard to choose.

To add to the experience, they didn’t have vanilla, which was my daughter’s preference. This could have prevented further interaction with the unwelcoming employee and made our visit more enjoyable. As an ice cream shop, they should prioritize improving their customer service and social skills. Based on this experience, I won’t be returning...

Will go back if nearby and want a treat but wouldn't go out of my way to have it. While it is NOT gelato; if you go there knowing that it is quite a good cold treat, although a little pricey: 4 stars. Cookies were pretty bad and way overpriced: 1 star. Seemed very clean and the two girls working were fantastic: 5 stars. 3 stars overall because it was packed due to 4th of July event down the road (which ownership/management had to have known about) and it was only the two girls who looked like they just got their drivers licenses working when the line was out of the door. We thought the one was going to have a panic attack the way she was hyperventilating; so we told her to slow down, take a few deep breaths, take her time, check us out in a minute, and she was beyond grateful that we assured her it was all ok.
