Fell far short of expectations, and turned out to be a Very poor experience. 2 nights ago, my husband and I went with some friends to this restaurant at the Hyatt. First off, I had to book 1-2 days in advance so I definitely had high hopes. It started great with amazing appetizers and drinks, but then when we placed our orders, the waiter talked up this amazing unique pink snapper that's Only available in Hawaii that has to be caught 200 ft down. So 3 of our party members ordered that, I amost did but since its a steakhouse me and my friend orderd steak. Thank God the guys ordered Lobster tail/shrimp with meal cause the runner beings out the food and serves them MAHI! However prior to this, NOTHINGwas mentioned Afrer we placed our order and Before we got our food to let us know in Advance that the snapper was no longer Available!! Instead, they just completely switched out TWO meals to something 100% different from what they had originally ordered saying "we swapped the snapper with the mahi". Plus, on top of that...my filet mignon was supposed to be medium, instead it came out Medium well and looked much smaller than 6oz AND did not much seasoningif any. Then, my friend's steak was ALSO overcooked/under unseasoned. But the shrimp she asked to be crispy/well done were UNDERCOOKED. We immediately asked for Manager and told him how ridiculous it was to be Served food we DID not request THEN have food we did request to be under/overcooked. Then they told us it would take about THIRTY minutes for the chef to make 2 New meals! Thanks God we ordered a ton of sides cause it was almost 10 pm and waiting to eat til 10:30 would have been absurd. Then, we get a NEW waiter cause old one must have not wanted to face us again, but when she brought the bill, despite the discount the manager gave us, bill was still over $250 for 4 people. Then when we asked to speak to Manager AGAIN about bill, he took Forever to speak to us, Depsite literally having only 2 tables left in restaurant with guests. Overall, over priced food, but not worthwhile At all. Yes it's literally one of 3 restaurants on property but seriously, i would be VERY careful what you order here if you go. But apps and sides were delicious (all except mushrooms-...
Read moreWe were familiar with the restaurant's location -- the Hyatt's Swan Court. A delightful restaurant set in a lush garden setting. Open air and just beautiful. But we hadn't tried Son'z before. We come to Maui every year and like to try new restaurants. This experience did not disappoint! We were greeted by Leani (sp?) who worked it out so we could be seated earlier than our reservation (so kind!) -- and selected a table for us that had a great view (they all do actually) and no direct sun. Quickly our server Laurie stopped by and gave us a topline on the dining experience and a few recos on drinks (to start our evening). I had the Maui Cosmo which was so refreshing and not too sweet -- my husband had a Belvedere Martini and it was great and a nice size! With Laurie's help we selected the lamb chops, the filet mignon, ONE (SO HUGE!) twice baked potato, and the Med salad with shrimp (to start). NOTE: We opted for meats but they had a lovely fresh fish selection and other fab non-meat options to choose from on the menu. Laurie was there to make sure we had everything we needed and were happy -- it was like eating in her home. Everything was done to perfection (temp/color of meats) and my husband who is a risk at a steak place (because he is an excellent grill master at home) raved about the lamb, its cooking, "pink in the middle" delivery and taste (so fresh not gamey). Laurie found out it was our anniversary so she brought us a lovely dessert to share (a mango whipped delight!). And we were lucky to have a visit from the manager Justin who gave us more background on the restaurant. It was such a great experience we decided to cancel dinner at another five star place and come back to Sonz -- Leani helped make that happen before we left. Fabulous experience (and the property is lovely to walk around...
Read moreThis is the first time in my life that I’ve ever written a negative review, but our experience at this restaurant was disappointing enough to make me do so.
We came here for dinner in this very beautiful place (because yes, the setting truly is stunning), but the evening was ruined by the behavior of a particularly unpleasant waiter (a man with a mustache). He asked me to go all the way back to my room to fetch my passport before allowing me to order a glass of wine. I’m 30 years old, and I haven’t been asked for that in years. He seemed to find the situation amusing. After my 10-minute absence, he handed our table over to another waiter (who was very kind) without giving us any explanation. Clearly, he didn’t like the look of us and probably assumed he wouldn’t receive a tip, judging by his attitude.
The wine then took forever to arrive… and was accompanied by a cockroach running under our feet. When we stood up, disturbed by the situation, the waiter in question seemed to laugh about it, which was even more unacceptable than the insect itself.
The manager, on the other hand, was very professional and insisted on offering us the meal, which we truly appreciated. However, despite his kind gesture, we left with empty stomachs and, above all, extremely disappointed and shocked by the disrespectful attitude of this waiter.
We dine out regularly and have never experienced anything like this. We are easy-going customers who value good service, and that evening we were left extremely disappointed. I don’t want this review to reflect poorly on the rest of the staff – nor on the manager, who was impeccable – but I do hope it will lead to some reflection, especially regarding this waiter, whose attitude has no place in an establishment of...
