I live about a half mile from JB Bagelry, so I decided to walk there and grab a sandwich for lunch today. (It was 59°, breezy, threatening to rain, and generally gross outside, so I committed to the walk. It had better be a good bagel, right?)
I would walk through snow, rain, heat or gloom of night to get another sandwich from this shop.
I arrived at 1:20, and nervous, as they close at 2:00. Who knows what their selection would be like? Maybe they closed early today and I walked in this lovely NE Ohio weather for nothing (other than my cardiac health).
I worried for no reason.
Immediately when you walk in, you are greeted by their staff. Today I had the pleasure of meeting Christina, the manager, and Lindsey, who made my sandwich. The interior is bright, clean, and decorated with plants (and the cutest crocheted bagel Iâve ever seen). Thereâs a few window seats, if youâd like to hang out and eat there. Truly, it would be a great place to hang out and get some work done - they also offer coffee and Monin syrups. You canât go wrong.
Christina was engaged in conversation with (what appeared to be) regulars, who were patiently waiting for their food. Maybe theyâre not regulars. She treated them like they were, but I have a feeling thatâs just how the staff is here). There was another gentleman who was also waiting, and engaging in conversation with Lindsey as she made everyoneâs sandwiches.
Friendly but not saccharineâŠ. Thatâs how Iâd describe the staff. You could tell that they were truly enjoying themselves, and it wasnât an act.
Okay, now for the food:
I am a carnivore at heart, but the Relax and Veg sounded so, so good. I contemplated adding ham to the sandwich, but I felt like keeping it true to what they have on the menu. Itâs written that way for a reason, right? Maybe Iâll go crazy them next time Iâm there, but not today. Veggie cream cheese, cucumber, pickled red onion, arugula, tomato, and provolone cheese. Perfect.
I ordered my veggie sandwich on a plain bagel. The bagel itself is so, so good. Itâs perfectly chewy and has a nice bite. I canât wait to try my rosemary bagel tomorrow!
Also - their veggie cream cheese spread?? Get out of here with that. So good!
I couldnât help but notice the cooler that is across from the register. It is stocked with lots of drinks, but its real star - their homemade cream cheese spreads. Dear God. I had to buy the Vanilla Cinnamon and Strawberry. I donât currently have any other bagels at my house (other than the rosemary salt one I bought), but if theyâre as good as the veggie spread, Iâll slather them on an old shoe. De-fricken-licious. They also have a featured flavor, which is currently pumpkin. Iâm not a PSL fan (or, truthfully, pumpkin, in general), but if thatâs your thing, then Iâd recommend it.
In all- I bought my sandwich, a bag of chips, a bagel, and two cream cheese spreads. All of it was less than $30, which is pretty good pricing, considering how expensive sandwiches tend to be.
I would be remiss not to mention one tiny gripe: their hours of operation. I understand (or, actually, I donât have any idea) that making bagels and spreads from scratch probably takes a good amount of time and effort. And , theyâre open fairly early (7am), so I can understand why theyâd close at 2:00. Iâm just a whiny baby who wanted to try this place for the last week, and kept missing my window of opportunity to do so. Iâd want a bagel at 3:00, or on Monday, when theyâre closed. Itâs more of a me-issue than a them issue.
Anyway, this is my long-winded way of saying: if you havenât checked out JB Bagelry yet, you need to. Itâs in the plaza that is âsandwichedâ (see what I did there) between Starbucks and Verizon, just East of The Greens of Lyndhurst. I truly look forward to coming back and trying all of their other sandwiches and bagels, and possibly becoming a regular face. Wonder if they have a frequent customer loyalty punch card? (Hint, hint, JB Bagelry).
Thank you for reinforcing why I love to shop and eat local and support...
Read moreI had the #6 Clubbin It on a Jalepeño Chedda bagel. The ingredients were fresh and the sandwich was delicious. My big problem is I asked for it toasted. He didn't tell me they can't send a bagel with cheese baked on it through the toaster as it can catch fire. He just built the sandwich and put it in the oven. When I got it home, the bottom half was soggy. If you go and want your bagel toasted first, watch them make your sandwich. As I said, mine wasn't toasted and after telling him to toast my wife's before building the sandwich, he still started putting the sandwich together. I stopped him and told him she wants it toasted. He said "She wants it toasted and then baked?" I said "yes". Her bagel was rosemary salt, no cheese baked on, so I don't know what excuse he has for...
