This is the first place I go, when I know I'll be last minute as always, and need something to bring over to a party or family event. I can always count on Modern Pastry to be open for people like me. I've always had a great experience here. The staff are super friendly and their customer service is fantastic. I've always been a fan of this spot because it's so close to my house, but also as a Medford resident, it's THE SPOT. I love their selection of various pastries, desserts, cakes, and Italian treats. Everything is delicious. I'm not just saying that, have you checked the pictures - yum! On occasion I'll buy a dozen little goodies to bring over to someone's house. I never know what to get, so I usually just ask the person putting my order together to just go nuts and choose what they feel is the yummiest. I love that. All these desserts are delicious and it's just fun to see someone enjoy a treat you've brought. The presentation of the desserts once they're packaged, just looking into that box of goodies, you can't help but want to try everything. So much yum. This has now become a tradition of mine to stop here for special occasions. Very convenient location in Medford Square, street parking, and you'll easily notice this place whether you're waiting for the traffic light or just driving by. It is cash only. Luckily there are banks and atms across the street, if you're like me and never think to bring cash. One thing I appreciate is the hours of operation on holidays. Like I mentioned above, I have a tendency to be last minute, my bad. But luckily there's hope if you are looking for a last minute bakery or want a change in your game. Lol. Overall, I'm a fan of Modern Pastry. I'll continue to go here and I suggest...

I love, love, love Modern! Someone else said, "their spinach pie is just like my grandmother's" and I agree. One and the same. It's my favorite lunch anywhere within Medford. Can't beat it in flavor or price. Just come early, because when the calzones are sold out, they're sold out.
As for the desserts, they are amazing! But order something Italian, because that's what they do best. I don't have much sympathy for the reviewer who gave 3 stars because the whoopie pies aren't like in California or the cupcakes taste two American. It's not a California bakery, and cupcakes are American. This is an Italian pastry shop. So order some Italian pastry. Skip the carrot cake and choose something else soaked in liquor and slathered in whipped cream or ricotta. Or get a cannolo (with ricotta filling, obviously). If you don't know what to get or how to get it, ask, "What's traditional?" so that they can choose for you. And if you ever have to order a cake for a party, order it here. I don't even like most cake, but I drool over Modern's masterpieces.
What a treat to have this place in...
Read moreWent to buy pastry after church yesterday to take to my son’s house for dessert after Sunday dinner. With our coffee, we all sampled each of the assortment. We all agreed that the quality of the name Modern Pastry sold in the past is no longer there. I purchased 10 pieces of Italian pastry — 4 ricotta cannoli, 2 sfogliatella, 2 paragina and 2 eclairs. The cannoli shells were stale; taste like they absorbed the stale oder of a musty smelling room or a damp basement…not quite mold, but close to it. The size of the cannoli were very small considering the price. The boiled cream in the paragina was a little off too. I don’t know why, maybe it was imitation vanilla they used. Not their usual boiled cream taste. I make my own boiled cream and it’s pretty simple and is super delish if you use quality products. Needless-to-say, not going back for a while; Modern Pastry is not the Modern Pastry I’m familiar with. My parents grew up in the North End of Boston so I’m very familiar with the bakery of the past. Deeply...
