5.29.2019 I was on business trip near by and was excited to try this place after all the great reviews both on Google and Yelp. As a chinese myself I never expect any great tasting Asian restaurants to be good simply b/c I'm just used to it. The young lady at the front was very polite and greeted me soon got me a table cleaned and seated me. I place an order of shrimp shumai and crab and pork soup dumpling. After about 5 mins I decided to add an order of the spicy beef and tripe cold plate. Cold plate came out first and I was immediately disappointed. There was literary 3 pieces of sliced beef. 6 slices of the tendon and rest were tripe (mostly fatty tripe which is not good for the cold dish). I finished all the beef and tendon with no complaint but did not touch the "tripe". Next item up was the Shrimp Shumai. I was a bit hesitant when I saw the shumai b/c it reminded me of a frozen pre-made shumai. After the first taste I am almost positive that it is a frozen shumai. Again I'm not here to just destroy people's reputation for no reason, but frozen is frozen. The shumai tasted okay but def a lot better with soy and chili sauce. From here on out I think my order and my presence fell into a black hole. after some time a chinese lady with iPad along with another chinese gentleman came to my side and right away ask me in mandarin what I want to order. I told her I already ordered and just waiting on my last one. The chinese gentleman then ask what am I waiting on, I told him crab pork soup dumpling in both mandarin and english. I was told it will be out soon. I then waited and saw the two tables next to me who all came and order after me are getting their dishes. I started to look impatient and annoyed. The front young lady at the register is very observant with my facial expression so she came right over asking if I was waiting on my check. I told her again I'm waiting for my soup dumping. She apologized and went to ask the older chinese gentle who came to my side earlier. I am told it's coming right out and that he was sorry for the wait. Finally another minute went by my soup dumpling came! Nope this is not the end of my bad dinner experience. The soup dumping look a bit dry but the actual soup juice and meat was good. The bun skin was too thick and I ate 3 dumplings where the bun still tasted uncooked. I left 3 half bitten soup dumplings and open the thick part with chopsticks and you can see the uncooked white portion in the bun. At this point I'm sorry I've had it with this place. I kindly walk up to the counter and have the young lady ring me up and I paid for the entire order but left no tip. No sure if the young lady gets any tip, but the over experience was horrible. no one ever came to me and ask about my orders. Not even my own server who took the order. This is one of the recent big "let down" when trying new places. I'm sure Tom's will continue to be fine but I'm def...
Read moreBYOB. BYOB. BYOB. I’m going to start by saying that three times because at no point on the website did it say that and until we walked into the restaurant and saw it on the front sign did we know. Very frustrating and when we asked the staff for the closest wine store, they told us to “put it in Google”… That wasn’t even the worst part. After seeing my confirmation email about our reservation, we showed up 5 minutes before. The restaurant was PACKED with several new tables recently sat. We had a party of three so two two-top tables were sat even though they came after us. FORTY minutes after showing up, we were FINALLY seated. So much for making a reservation when it didn’t matter.
We sit down and they hand us three glasses, one of which was totally cracked. It took 10 minutes to get a new one. When we finally ordered we asked if they could add one additional soup dumpling so we had an even amount across our table and the waiter goes “no, we don’t do that.” Um, I mean ok. You CAN. But ok then. Enough of the unkind people semantics - the food. Chicken soup dumplings (5)- there was definitely enough for a sixth (just saying). Not a ton of soup inside and kind of cold. Had better elsewhere. Shrimp shumai (4) - large, filling. Solid dish. Fried vegetable dumplings (5) - full of vegetables but not a ton of flavor. Duck over rice (small portion) - sadly not a lot of meat. More fat and bone on the plate. Seafood fried rice - not really much of a fry to it or sauce on top. Decent amount of shrimp and scallop. Wonton soup - sizable wontons, flavorful Pork and chive dumpling noodle soup - udon noodles with five large pork and chive dumplings. Few pieces of bok choy, but not much else to it. Sautéed baby bok choy- massive plate sautéed in garlic. Pretty solid. Totally share this with your table.
Food was fine, but the service and impoliteness was REALLY not cool....
Read moreLet me get this out of the way before I comment on the food: I called and placed and order for 4 items which were repeated to me over the phone and I was told it would be ready in 15 mins. I arrived in 30 mins and the man at the desk could not find my order. Hs then called someone on the phone (apparently someone in the back) and found out there was an order taken but not made! There only two tables occupied (one had just ordered, the other hadn’t ordered) and the man explained he didn’t know what was going on and he’d just returned. He told me they would now have to prepare my order. 30 minutes later I was able to get it. I would have left without getting the food but he’d already charged my card before he reluctantly announced they would have to prepare it. How aggravating with no offer of making up for this faux pas.
The food: The dim sum is good.I got pork and chive dumplings and Shanghai dumplings. The won-ton soup was terrible - not miuch soup loaded up weirdly with escarole and bok choy and 3 dumplings and it was tasteless! I also got a shrimp noodle dish which had a load of overcooked noodle soaked in a brown sauce that was bland and tasteless with 5 shrimp which believe or not was also tasteless. Ughhh.
If you must go there stick to their limited dim sum menu and forego the rest! I’ll be trying dim sum - which I really love - else where. I don’t think I’ll be checking out the place 2 doors down. I’m all for forgiving a disastrous first experience except for the fact that of the...
