Overall my family loves Sekai! They have great sushi and I believe probably some of the best sushi I can find in Mesa. However, there's a few things to call out. They have struggled with large parties. When we go with 6 people or more don't plan on eating together. They tend to deliver the food as it arrives so one person may be finished eating before someone else even gets their food. Secondly, this is absolutely true if you love their sashimi salad as I do! It's great just don't order 6 of them at once!
The second item to call out is in regards to allergies. Recently my girlfriend came with us to eat sushi however she's highly allergic to seafood/shellfish. I called ahead and confirmed they had fish free items including the yakasoba and teriyaki Chicken, however when she was eating the chicken teriyaki she did have an allergic reaction. I realize it can be challenging have a seafood allergy at a sushi restaurant, however was disappointing to hear about the reaction. We're not sure exactly what might have cause it be she's had reactions to cross contamination including chicken cooked on the same grill as fish or being cut by a knife used on fish. I'm unfortunately not even able to kiss her for hours after eating sushi so definitely a challenge. I appreciate Sekai attempting to accommodate the allergy, but think it might be good to ensure absolute 0 cross contamination...
Read moreLoved this place! Delicious rolls, quality nigiri and friendly helpful staff!
I came here a half hour before they closed and was concerned they were finished serving, but they welcomed me in graciously and got up getting ready to give me everything id need ( I was the only customer there and the employees had been sitting and talking, very warm environment. Looks like a fun place to work) I sat at the bar and was given miso soup and the ordering sheet with the pencil, my favorite way to order, and as I was trying to discern the rolls the chef noticed and handed me some more detailed menus. They were prompt at getting my drink and keeping it filled, even though I drink a lot. The nigiri came first and it was very fresh fish with an easy bite. The wasabi and ginger were average, but I don't have high expectations for those. The salmon nigiri had a lemon slice between them which really brightened the flavor. The tuna was cut long over the rice, which was nice since there was more fish for me! The yellowtail roll I got was yummy but uninspired, I smeared some wasabi on top and really got a flavor I enjoyed. I loved the eel avocado roll I got, sweet chewy and well cut. Definitely a treat. All in all really high quality fish for price, the staff was very attentive and kind, the rolls were yummy and I look forward to...
Read moreI am giving one star only because the young gentleman who served me was exceptional. I previously rated this place with five stars. That was before these people took over. I ordered the gyoza pan fried. Well the man who ran around like a lunetic should eat his own food. The gyoza was dropped in the deep fried for about five seconds. It was cold, terribly greasy, and the dough was not cooked. I heard him drop my gyoza in the deep drier and then it suddenly appeared. I also ordered the baked lobster roll that was equally cold. It was definitely NOT BAKED but possibly microwaved for the quick few seconds. Then he squirted this sauce all over it. It was the worst lobster roll i ever ate. The previous owner, Ms. Moon put out quality food and the restaurant was always busy. But the people who own it now take zero pride in their work and I mean zero. There was a man that I think I recognized as one of the original sushi chefs standing behind the counter and looking disgusted at the zero quality food being served. The lunatic looked like he was on drugs or something. Unfortunately, I will never be visiting my previous favorite sushi place again. This meal did me in for good. It is NOT a fast food joint so Dont rush the food or the customers. Oh and get rid of the useless chef who is driving yoyr...
