I had a mixed experience at Club Space. I have wanted to check this out for a while, and so was pretty psyched to pop in.Overall cool vibes, good door service, but a weird experience at the bar and a sticky and packed dance floor.
The door guy was super super kind and friendly, made conversation with my sister and I and let us in early/ allowed us to essentially cut the line despite us having $60 incorrect event tickets. (We stupidly came a day early, a total oversight which we genuinely did not realize until we were about to enter. The door guy sympathized and was a bro about it! For people who bought tickets in advance, getting in was not bad at the time that we went (Friday at 9:30pm). There were people trying to buy tickets on the spot, and they were having a harder time and being quoted large amounts. I also think many folks who would typically be at the club were at Ultra, and we left the festival a bit early to intentionally avoid this crowd. It was great to be able to get in so quickly with our tickets (albeit the incorrect ones!)
The ambiance inside was really trippy and cool, and the music was awesome-- we went specifically during MMW to see a particular DJ, and the audio and set did not disappoint! The club is large and beautiful. It looks a bit underwhelming on the outside, but inside is unique-- vibrant colors, a space theme, rooms with textured mirrors, and a really cool mainstage setup. It was dimly lit but you could still clearly see around.
Despite there being no line at the time we came, the dance floor was packed to the point where you could barely move-- bodies squished in everywhere. It was hot and sticky and a bit smelly, and when a couple kind of creepy guys started talking to my sister, it was difficult to navigate away from them because people were packed in there so tightly. I understand that this is par for the course during MMW, but stating for the purposes of accurately recapping my experience.
Service at the bar was a letdown. My sister an I were totally sober upon entering, and wanted to grab a couple drinks. We waited at one bar counter for over 10 min without getting any service, and the bar was not busy-- no one acknowledged us. The bartender was chatting with a friend and restacking cups while we waited patiently and silently. He looked over at us a few times and said nothing. I went to another bar, an ordered a basic drink-- it was $20 and about 80% ice with a couple splashes of alcohol-- despite this, I tipped over 20%. I asked the same bartender politely if I could get a glass of water for my sister as well, and the bartender pretended not to hear me. My sister politely repeated the ask the next time he came around, and he ignored us again. About 5 minutes later, my sister typed out in her notes app "Hi there! Sorry, but can I please have a glass of water?" and put her phone on the bar, thinking that perhaps the bartender could not hear us. The bartender yelled at us to go away and dramatically flailed his hands. A man nearby witnessed this, and asked the bartender what was wrong with him. I was shocked-- it was a very rude interaction, and I have honestly never experienced anything like this. My sister is 29, I am 30, and we were not being rowdy or rude-- just asking a basic question. It was embarrassing and strange. I live in Los Angeles and work out of NYC often and am accustomed to going to large venues and busy clubs frequently for work events, and for fun. I pride myself in being patient and polite, having bartended and waitressed myself before and knowing how stressful the job can be. My sister is even more meek and timid than me.
I was truly mystified by this-- I read online that the club has a policy about paying for water, which is a bit silly imo, but whatever-- we would have paid for the water if he had explained that to us. After that encounter, we walked around the packed club a bit, but he killed our vibe a bit.
I would probably go back to Space to see a DJ I like play, but will pregame it before to fully avoid interacting with the...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreon Saturday 09.11. we went to the club Space for the Joseph Capriati event, and I really don't wish everything we experienced on anyone, that's why I hope that someone will read my comment before deciding to enter the club. so we entered without waiting around 02:00 in the morning, the club was half empty and quite a lot of younger people were in it, we didn't mind. we decided to stay at the right bar next to the stage, where the entrance/exit for the performers is because there was the most space to dance. we started ordering drinks; to mention that a shot of tequila don julio is $20. we spent (there were 3 of us) over 700 dollars and we did not for a single moment want or ask for an account to be opened, but as we ordered, we paid, sometimes in cash, sometimes by card. in the late morning, we noticed that the waitress ( tall brown long hair Italian girl ) who served us drinks was quite drunk after we paid her some drinks, and that she didn't return the card to us during the last payment. We saw that she was holding it in her hand and doing some actions on the computer while also few bills that were not ours, where in her hand. when we asked the waitress for the card, she ignored it several times and we tried to communicate with her to return the card to us because we want to go home. suddenly we noticed that club bouncers were gathering around us and that they were all communicating with each other and approaching us. I, as the only female within my friends, felt extremely scared and uncomfortable. in the end, I personally aggressively asked for the card and asked what she was doing with it when we didn't order anything, but the waitress still pretended not to hear me, and her colleague approached me with the sentence: "okay guys, are you ready to close your account?" to which I told him that we do not have an account open, but as we ordered, we also paid. at that moment, the visibly drunk and disoriented waitress rudely turns around and throws the card on the bar and gives us a hand signal to go out the club, smiling at the two of guards, and a huuuuge security guard appears behind us and follows us to the central exit. as we were walking towards the ground floor, we notice behind the curtain of the lower floor that one of the guards was behind it and followed us the whole time from the other side. so it is clear that she tried to scam us through the credit card she took from us and everyone together in the club knows what she is being doing. when she didn't succeed, they worked with the guards to scare us and chase us out as soon as possible. I waited until I returned to my country to write this comment because at one point we even feared...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreA great nightclub in terms of atmosphere, music and setting, but the organisation leaves something to be desired.
We had 10AM tickets for MMW Solid Grooves, we got in line at 10:30am on Saturday morning. We queued for 4 hours to get in(!), it was 2:30pm when we finally made our way up the famous stairs of the Space.
There were only two queues, VIP/Guest List and General Admission. It didn't matter if it was Anytime entry or if your ticket had a specific entry time. The line stretched almost the entire block. There were no stewards or other staff on site to control the situation, so naturally people were shamelessly skipping the queue, going to hug their "friends" and magically staying in place, skipping half of the queue. Nobody said anything, and when calling these people out, they just shrugged. Only closer to the door there were some bouncers controlling the situation, but further down the street it was Wild West.
From what I heard, the club was "at capacity", meaning that when one person comes out, one gets in.
A lot of people got fed up with the waiting and were selling their tickets after waiting for couple of hours and the line not moving, and others found that the way to skip the queue was to head onto the door and give a hefty tip to the bouncers and skipping the queue that way. And plenty of people did.
After the painful four hours of queuing was over, the atmosphere inside was great, and as a positive surprise, there was plenty of room on the dancefloor. There were a lot of people, sure, but still plenty of room to dance in my opinion.
If you compare this to the nightclubs in Europe and especially Ibiza's DC10 or HĆÆ, there was definitely A LOT more room for dancing. That's a BIG BIG plus, and honestly lifted our spirits when we actually could move easily! Being used to madness of Circoloco at DC10, it honestly was great. The sound system on the terrace was great and regular CO cannon blasts kept it cool.
While I respect the hell out of the fact that they seem to more or less respect the legal capacity of the club, it is still quite incomprehensible that you had to queue for 4 hours despite having bought the tickets beforehand.
All in all, despite the painful queuing, we had a great time and definitely a nightclub worth to visit, especially in the morning/daytime, where in my opinion, it shines as one of the most unique nightclubs in the world.
Just prepare yourself mentally to wait.. and wait.. and wait.. Or buy a VIP table or bribe the bouncers š Happy...
