I'd like to begin on a positive note and say that the food was delicious. The service, on the other hand, left a lot to be desired.
We were a party of four, celebrating Valentine's Day and looking forward to our first time at La Rosa Fine Cuban Cuisine Restaurant because it was recommended by a friend. Our waitress was Esther H. The problems began early on. She asked us if we were going to have any drinks, and we said that we were fine with just water. You could tell in her body language and the fact that she rolled her eyes that she disapproved. We then ordered our food. She did not like the fact that one of us ordered a well done churrasco. Her facial expressions said it all. It was a pretty busy evening, and Esther had a young lady by the name of Kerly (not sure of the spelling) assisting her. Kerly was constantly making sure that our glasses had plenty of water and asked if we needed anything else. When we finished our meal, Kerly came by to pick up our plates and we asked her about dessert. She told us all the choices we had. We went ahead and told her we wanted one flan de coco, one arroz con leche, an order of buñuelos, and two cortaditos. She went to the small table towards the kitchen where they keep the water, and we saw that Esther was speaking to her in a rude manner as if reprimanding her. We then saw Kerly leave to the ladies' room. Esther came to our table to double check the cortaditos order and check to see if we wanted sugar added to our cortaditos or not. She told us that "the girl" had told her that the cortaditos were for the two gentlemen, when actually it was for one of the gentlemen and for one of us ladies. I guess she wanted to let us know that Kerly was wrong. Shortly after, we saw Kerly go back to the table in the back and it was obvious that she had been crying.
This type of employee belittling and condescending behavior should never be allowed whether in front of customers or not. For heaven's sake, all Kerly was trying to do was to help Esther. Honestly, witnessing this type of behavior completely ruined our night and is the basis for our ONE star review. We will not be returning to your restaurant as we will never condone this type of behavior in any...
Read moreSuch a shame. I have been eating in La Rosa for over 40 years. Because of work, I hadn’t been to Miami for quite some time. La Rosa used to be a favorite of mine and I recommended it to dozens of people. Food used to be authentic, perfect, with good portions for a fair price, service and atmosphere were those of a classic Cuban joint. What a disappointment it has become in most of those points. They have “remodeled it” to look like some kind of semi modern generic restaurant. The waiters they always had are gone and so are their traditional waiter attire, which should be no big deal, but it’s worth noting because it was sort of the charm of the place. The problem comes with whatever idea someone sold the owners so as to optimize profits. Some of their most popular dishes (and staples of Cuban food) like vaca frita, maduros and others are not in the menu (which now includes generic stuff like hamburgers), although, of course, the waitress will “have them made for you”. The portions are about half what they used to be, and their prices have gone waaaay above any inflation. They seem to try to make up for it, with some garnishing and decorations in their plates (like serving about 2 meagre spoonfuls of ropa vieja inside a red pepper). What used to be a wonderful, fulfilling experience, will now leave you hungry and reminiscent of the old La Rosa. They will charge 5 bucks for a small Cuban espresso. Ridiculous. They will not give you a print copy of your bill. Instead, they will bring you a machine to your table with the bill and use that trending and odious social pressure technique of displaying the tipping options in front of the whole table. Unfortunate. The experience was less than satisfactory. As it is, I will not come back to La Rosa. I will keep the old restaurant in my memories and will definitely not recommend it anymore. At least we still have La Carreta for Cuban food. La Rosa used to be better than the later. It is...
