Miss Crispy Rice is an abomination to Japanese cuisine and to the Miami food scene. We went for the Taste of the Gables dinner omakase, and we left hungry, grossed out and quite frankly sad for the people who go there with their hard earned money for what they think will be a quality meal.
The 12 course meal started with two separate crudo dishes - these were the best dishes we had all night, which was sad. Each piece of nigiri was bad, particularly the tuna which was served as simply a cut of tuna on top of rice and was very fishy. I think the chef forgot to brush a dash of soy sauce on the piece, or tuck a piece of wasabi under the fish - either would've helped to mask the fishiness. For a place called Miss Crispy Rice, the crispy rice was mediocre at best. The scallop was cut way too thick for Japanese cuisine and was fishy, and the other two pieces were just unimpressive at best. The dumplings (one soup, one regular) were absolutely positively store bought and poorly steamed (served slightly warmer than room temp) and served to customers. Embarrassing to say the least.
The hand roll deserves its own paragraph because it was just that bad. It was an insult to hand rolls across the globe. The hand roll we were served was seaweed, sushi rice, a piece of shrimp tempura, an egg tartar on top, and then ikura on top of that. Stop and think about that for a second. Something that had wouldn't even exist in the Publix sushi section (I would argue Publix sushi was better than everything we had tonight for the record). Awful.
The chefs surprise was fine, nothing to write home about. I would argue that bone marrow has no place in a restaurant doing even non-traditional omakase, and I would absolutely not eat bone marrow from a place like this now that I can understand the quality (or lack thereof) of their fish. The soup was not good. Lastly, the dessert was pistachio gelato with cherry ice on top. It's important to note that on top of the awful flavor pairing and poor texture of both the gelato and the shaved ice, it was immediately evident that the dish was pre-served, put back into the freezer, and then served to guests. Bad.
Service was good! The people were very nice! My one star goes to the very kind server who had just started working there.
Overall, if you have never had sushi of any kind before, this will be fine, just please know this is the bottom of the barrel in terms of quality of fish, flavor pairings, and creativity. If you have had Uchi, Midorie, Shingo, Ogawa, or anything like any of those restaurants, you will probably be physically sick after eating this meal and yearning for the educated, elevated flavor pairings you can expect from those places. I'm glad we went and tried because this is going to be a restaurant I talk about for a long time simply because it is so bad. It also will probably change the trajectory of my life in that I think I'm gonna start reviewing food seriously now just to save people from places like this....
Read moreWent in with my coworkers and had a horrible experience last week. Server and chef was unprofessional. You could hear them flirting and wrestling in the kitchen. What was worse besides this which you would expect a lot more from an establishment or any establishment is conduct. We were asked if we had allergies and i unfortunately do have a slight one. The embarrassment came from the server who went and told the chef in Spanish but the action of this person is beyond me. She made a gesture of pulling at her eyes slightly as she said the Chinese woman in Spanish. My party and I saw it all and was in disbelief. As the only ASIAN that was in the whole restaurant could only mean me .Mind you i am not Chinese. And the fact that we live in Miami and yes as an Asian woman I do understand Spanish . I couldn't even enjoy the meal as the whole experience left an awful taste in my mouth. Both the chef and the server left everyone alone in the restaurant several times and were in the kitchen and mind you we could hear them all laughing and whatnot. Then as the meal ended the chef just left and went and sat in his WHITE car as we saw him as we left to our vehicles. Everything was in plain view and seen. The two did not even look like they truly wanted to be there. Maybe you should hire people who actually want to do their job and be more professional. Unsure how to take this experience and i hope the owners of this establishment will speak to these 2 employees and what professionalism and correct conduct is because the next customer may not be as kind and me and this was not at all mind you. Will never return. The taste of the gables of this restaurant left a bad taste in my mouth....
Read moreI have been wanting to try Miss Crispy Rice but it's a bit far from me. I took advantage of coming here during Miami Spice. They had a 13 course dinner for $60. Good but not great.
First course started off strong. Tasty sashimi. Fresh and served chill on ice. The dumplings were the second course and my guest and I were both disappointed. Not good. Next few items were nigiri but on crispy rice. Had a spicy tuna and an eel. The issue is the crispy rice was too tall. We had a hard time and would have had a better experience if they were flatter. The fish roe on eel was unique though and I liked it. The next piece was scallop with a small taste of uni. The crispy rice took over the taste here. Again, the crispy rice can be more flatter so it isn't a dominant taste. Next we had regular nigiri on sushi rice. There was no sauce brushed on these so we didn't like that. Should have at least a soy sauce or wasabi. The handroll that we had next was a shrimp tempura roll. Didn't exactly fit with a nori sheet. We then tried a beef and egg rice bowl. Beef had good flavor. The miso soup that came next had too much stuff in it. My guest didn't like it. They didn't provide us with a spoon so it was hard to sip it when corn was sitting at the bottom of the bowl. Last, we had an ice cream that was nice and refreshing.
We thought they took too much time in between each course. The staff is also not fixated on customer service. For my entire seating, we were all doing Miami Spice. It was prepaid and tip was already included on the booking. The service didn't seem like they were on it. But they got...
