Sunny Side Cafe & Eatery — Restaurant in Miami

Sunny Side was our choice for a late breakfast on a Monday.

We almost didn't go because when we arrived, there was no parking. We spun the block to another restaurant (they didn't have parking either), but ended back a Sunny Side where a space opened. We are visiting from Kentucky where parking is not an issue where we live, so it's a bit of a hassle for us and it has been a challenge to readjust to the Miami norms, especially in March.

When we entered, we were seated immediately on the outdoor patio. It was not crowded, so we ordered and ate all within what seemed like 30 minutes.

I had the avocado toast ($15) with a latte ($5). Both my toast and latte were standard, so nothing too amazing to write home about. My partner had the smoked salmon, which came with roasted potatoes ($19) and a lemonade ($7). I tried the salmon, and maybe it was just the piece I had, but it was bland. The potatoes were really good and full of flavor, though.

Key takeaways: The food was good; I don't think it's possible to mess up avocado toast or smoked salmon. Service was good. It's a small, cozy atmosphere that was not too crowded. The atmosphere was relaxing. The weather was beautiful, so we opted to sit outside, which had the view of a garden. 18% gratuity is automatically included (there we 2 people in our party).

I didn't like that the bathroom was "right there"! There was a table literally right by the bathroom door. Added to that, it is one room/stall. If the bathroom was occupied, you had to find somewhere to wait. Everywhere I stood obstructed someone's way - either the wait staff going in/out or the other diners who were seated near the door/ bathroom.

There are approximately 8 free parking spaces for the restaurant, and one was designated for disabled parking. Parking is tight, but there is paid street parking (but who wants to pay to park?). You park using a mobile app or call the number provided if you have an account.

BEWARE UNDISCLOSED 18% MANDATORY SERVICE CHARGE, no mention of this on the website or menu. An ok, yet overpriced meal was ruined at the end by horrible server behavior. We were finished, all plates and drinks were cleared away. Took the server 30 minutes to come do the payment. AFTER BEING PROMPTED multiple times we were done and ready to go. Then they use one of those dreaded gadgets to immediately do payment WITHOUT BRING A PAPER COPY of the check first to be able to review it. She very rudely informed about the UNDISCLOSED MANDATORY 18% service charge, this absolutely explains the HORRIBLE SERVICE, why provide good service when she knows she's getting paid regardless. We always tip, but this day I was tempted not to as NO CUSTOMER SHOULD HAVE TO WAIT 30 MINUTES FOR THE CHECK THAT NEVER COMES AND CANT BE REVIEWED UNTIL AFTER PAYING, and even then she really didn't want to bring a receipt either. Why are all Miami restaurants so shady. If a service charge is the unfortunate path chosen for the business, THIS NEEDS TO BE DISCLOSED, on the WEBSITE and PRINTED MENU, large enough to actually be seen. Be prepared to pay for street parking as they only have 4 difficult to access spots on the property shared with multiple businesses. Fantastic breakfast experience with great food, outdoor ambiance, and excellent service

We had an amazing breakfast today at Sunny Side Café & Eatery, and everything—from the food to the service—was absolutely spot on.

We were seated in the outdoor seating area, which was not only beautifully set up but also very relaxing and comfortable. It made for a perfect start to the day. The service was excellent, and our waiter Aristoteles went above and beyond—he was friendly, attentive, and made sure everything was just right throughout our meal.
