I so much wanted to love The French Gourmet Bistro. Unfortunately after my first dinner there, I left completely underwhelmed.
Great first impression as we were immediately greeted when we arrived and shown to a table. There was live music happening and it was very pleasant and at a level so that you could easily converse at your table without the music interfering. Besides our table, there were only four other tables with diners, so it wasn’t very busy for the couple of waiters. Our waiter was friendly but wish he had come around to check in a bit and was better about refilling our waters.
My low rating for The French Gourmet Bistro is due to my disappointment with food. One of my favorite crepes is a Caprese. Pesto, mozzarella, fresh tomato, & fresh basil. It’s perfection, I’m telling you! Well that’s exactly what was listed on the menu, so I ordered it and was all excited. It came and looked wonderful, & I took a picture. I started at one end and the crepe was nice and crisp at the edge and thin and had nice spring. The cheese was warm and somewhat melted, tomato was room temperature and I wished they had been more ripe. I didn’t taste any pesto or basil, so I went in a little deeper and took another bite, and still nothing, so I opened up the crepe to find that two of the four fillings were missing. It took a while to catch our waiter’s eye, but when I told him that the crepe was missing the basil and pesto, he quickly said he’d get it fixed. And he was quick, as moments later he returned with my original plate now decorated with cold pesto, instead of having it warm and in the crepe, and he that the Chef said that the dried parsley that came on the crepe originally, is basil. Nope, I may not be a chef, but I sure as heck know the difference between parsley and basil, thank you very much! I gave it a try and with the cold pesto squirted on top, it just wasn’t pleasant. I politely told our waiter that it was disappointing and wasn’t working for me and he removed it from the table and the bill. For dessert, our waiter highly recommend the lemon cheesecake, so I tried it, and wish I hadn’t. The only thing with any flavor was the lemon frosting. The cheesecake itself was dry and tasteless, and the crust was almost as thick as the cheesecake layer, and it too was tasteless, dry and just yuk! My decaf bombon was good, so at least a good coffee to end...
Read moreThe first thing you notice about the restaurant is the Ambiance and the decor is definitely upscale. The full service bar and lounge area is warm and inviting and I'm told they will start offering a happy hour soon too.
You have the choice of indoor or patio seating and there is also a private room for special events or groups. It was raining the evening he got there but the patio is so well-covered you could still sit outside and enjoy the air and not get wet.
We got there early for oyster night we had seen on Facebook. With a large selection (of course French) wines to choose from and we paired it with oysters Rockefeller and oysters on the half shell. The French onion soup to start and the Cafe Gourmand dessert (combo offering of mini sized chocolate mousse and creme brulee, a crepe and espresso).
Everything is made to order and from scratch for this traditional French restaurant. Like the quiet elegant atmosphere the food matches with the attention to detail... right down to the artist pallet plates the dessert was served on.
The only thing missing is the accordion player to make you think you're sitting in a cafe in Paris. I understand they have the live accordion music for their wine tasting nights that feature French wines from different regions for each event. I will put that on my must try list. In this post covid-19 era it's good to see a fully open small business and locally owned restaurant open again to get back to the evenings out and fine dining...
Read moreI haven't expected much after the Pure Taqueria but expected something decent taking into account Theo's Brothers Bakery. Overall it was so mediocre that frankly it didn't worth the money. The staff made us feel awkward. The waiter wasn't able to answer a simple question about the menu and we got the dessert before our meal. My quiche was quite nice but with the insides broken into water and egg shards because there was so much onion and it became watery inside. My husband's benedict was hard to chew because the bread was so hard. The most pathetic part of it was "profiteroles". I've been working in restaurants for a while. I'm not super-picky but it's better not to cook anything if you're not able to do it. It wasn't a profiterole but just a thick bread with a spit of ice-cream inside. It's clearly visible on the picture. Collet French Pastry serves it much better for much more reasonable price. Next time I would go somewhere else if I'll be willing to spend 60...
