Travis AKA Doughboy Food ReviewsTravis AKA Doughboy Food Reviews
Bavarian Beast: Last Saturday for a friend’s bachelor party we had dinner at Saz’s State House. I know from past experience that their ribs are delicious, but I wanted to get something memorable for this special occasion. I went with their 1Ib soft pretzel (which is actually made by Milwaukee Pretzel Company) known as the Bavarian Beast. Beast. Milwaukee Pretzel Company pretzels are handmade and freshly baked the same way it has been done in Germany for hundreds of years. It was truly a site to behold. The pretzel itself was warm, soft, chewy, and probably contained a week’s worth of sodium/salt. Four different dipping sauces accompany the pretzel. These include nacho cheese, cinnamon icing, nacho cheese, and Bavarian beer mustard. I found the nacho cheese to be fairly similar to the beer cheese, but there was a subtle difference in flavor and color (I slightly preferred the nacho cheese). I’m not a big mustard guy outside of honey mustard, so I thought it was just okay. Whoever thought of adding cinnamon icing is a genius as it made for a perfect way to turn my entrée into a dessert as well. I devoured about 2/3 of the pretzel before cutting myself off (trust me when I say I could have easily finished it though), not bad considering it was designed to share between 3-6 people. Doughboy approved *Only complaint is the server brought a box that was way too small for the remainder of the pretzel without me having to hack it to pieces like an axe murderer first and she also did not provide any containers for my extra sauce (I anticipated this so I brought my own).

I just picked up 2 fish fries for my wife and I. 1 baked, 1 fried and an order of onion straws. I've never been here before so this was my first order and I even stated that to the gentleman that took my order. Sadly, I couldn't even eat anything beyond 1 piece of fried fish. The baked fish was dry. The potato pancakes tasted salty and looked like they were deep fried. 1 pancake was complete flat and burned, and the other was cooked beyond recognition. It was so over cooked/fried that it wasn't even soft inside but cooked to a crisp with no tenderness whatsoever. The fried fish was so salty that I peeled off the breading so i could try to eat it and to my surprise, the stack of breading tremendously outweighed the fish so I gave up. This was my first visit to saz's and I will be sure to never have the fish fry again! I thought a nicer place would have a great fish fry but I was wrong. I should've just went to Gilles down the street from our house and spent half the money and gotten better food. I'll try saz's again for their burger menu and I'll keep my fingers crossed for that one.

So yeah, I have loved Saz's for years, having eaten their food at Summerfest every year I've gone. In my eyes, their sampler platter is an institution. I was in the area this past weekend and decided to go to their restaurant with my wife and a friend. It was not busy at all for a Saturday night, which I found a bit odd, but hey... We started off with the festival combo and I apologize, as we started digging in before I got a decent pic, it was that inviting. My wife ordered the BBQ loaded mac and cheese while I got the Red, White, and Blue Burger on a pretzel bun. My burger was cooked a perfect medium rare, just like I ordered, and it was a fantastic greasy burger! My wife's mac and cheese was fantastically creamy and delicious as well. If there is one criticism, it was almost too much food for us. The portions were really good size and that is not a bad thing, but they were almost too big. Not complaining though! Overall, it was a fun time and the atmosphere was great.

First time I came here (a long while ago, 2011ish maybe) their bbq options were great. But now it's a little less stellar. Some things taste or seem to be boiled when they should be bbq, you know.

Anyways this place gets 4 starts from me, and that's due to 1 thing, their burgers! So this review may only reflect their burgers only. Service has always been normal. Before I get to the burger I should mention this place is always packed!!!!!! Many people come for shuttles to the games I guess. I would suggest coming here for lunch if you're trying to eat anything.

Havent been here for a while, so this isnt a review for a recent outing, but I can recall that every burger (at least 5 burgers) that I've had at this place or from this place has been CONSISTENTLY perfect! At times your even catch me say things like this is my favorite burger spot ever. Another cool thing is that they have (or had) monthly chef special burger specials. Now that I've been going around eating burgers more often, this will now be a reason that saz will be seeing me at least once a month, I also happen to live within walking distance.

The burgers are my favorite things but heres one thing that is very uniquely special about saz, their white bbq sauce which come with their chive fries. One of the best sauce I've ever had in my life, hands down. If I really think about it they're probably the reason why I now love 52 different sauces on my burger all at once or at least variety to dip from. Yes I'm a sauce guy.

Give this place a try, I for sure will and very...

They have problems when you walk in the door. I was told there was a 45 minute wait. I walk in and sit at the bar, I saw 5 tables open. I ordered at the bar, easy enough, a chicken sandwich with the extras (sauce etc. on the side and my friend ordered a salad. The bartender appeared to have an attitude because I asked for the extras on the side. Well, after sitting and waiting for our food for an hour, and noticing that people sat down after us, had their food. I started questioning the bartender's. No explanation. I got up and walked out. I called the next day. The Manager said it was their busy time and would have someone call back the next day. Much to my surprise, it was one of the hosts. She said that it was 25 minutes from our order time. I can't believe that employees at this establishment would even suggest that the guest was wrong or lying. I would like to know, for what reason would I lie about how long it was taking to get our food? I have never been to a restaurant like this before. Very poor service and when mentioning this to friends, I was told that they also didn't care for Saz's as well. It is my suggestion to train your employees to respect your guests and use better customer service skills. The the guests are paying your salary, so if you want to be paid respectfully, "RESPECT" your guests, that goes for the bartenders too. I will "never" return there and wouldn't suggest any of my friends go...
