Business traveler - I ordered from China Star $15.72 for Shrimp Fried Rice and Pot Stickers. I got the meal back to the motel room, opened the container for the pot stickers and there was a long black hair. I have short brown hair. I knew right then I was going to take it back. Some people wouldn't. I did not even bother opening the shrimp fried rice. I took it all back and approached the counter. A man responded in poor English. He at first did not understand but located the long black hair and pulled it out. I had no intention of getting a refund. Lost cause, they win all around but what a waste. He said something about remaking as I was leaving. I said I do not trust this place anymore. I come to Madison on business twice a month and typically stay at the same motel next to China Star. I have been OK with what I received here before but because they are not busy I am disappointed in getting a black long hair in my pot stickers. When that happens, and I have ordered two items - I don't want the other item. I guess I could have pushed for a refund but bottom line is I won't go back. China Star is 100% a take out Chinese restaurant and set up for that. I have a lot of difficulty finding gourmet Chinese that I trust on the road. Too bad most Chinese restaurants have gone downhill from 30 years ago when they trended up. Poor English on ordering and poor English on pick up and explanation of issue does not help. To me, $16 for a dinner is a lot. I had to then run over to Red Robin and get a burger and fries to salvage my dinner. I simply do NOT recommend this restaurant because the quality of their food is maybe a 7 out of 10 and for $16 I want a solid well crafted Chinese meal. You decide - but the hair in my hastily prepared food is a deal killer for me. No stars due to complete loss of money and no food to show for it and poor...
Read moreNot sure what store Mr. Berg was in, but the China Star restaurant I ate at last night was very clean and ALL of the staff I encountered were extremely pleasant (the little girl who brought over fortune cookies was too sweet) . I honestly wasn't expecting much when I walked in. Everything down to the neon signs and little Chinese new year "placemats" or whatever, screamed "cheap Chinese food"! Athough the prices were very reasonable, and the food came out very fast, the flavors were all authentic and the veggies were fresh (unlike my last few trips to Wah Kee).
I went with the whole family and when my 3 year old started getting a little loud, the owner had her daughter bring over some fortune cookies.
By the time we left, everything about the place reminded me more of the little restaurants you find in "China Towns" across the country than the chains that dominate the scene here. I'm sure...
Read moreI'm pretty surprised about the food that I got this evening as I do order frequently not a lot but frequently from China Star here in Monona. I've never had a reason to complain before but I just have to share this. I ordered the Mongolian chicken and it tasted good but I had eaten about a bowl or so and found literally VERY little chicken but onions were not in short supply. The photos show the truth. Onions galore but very little chicken. I think I mistakenly ordered the Mongolian onion dish. Disappointed to say the least. I understand that things have gotten more expensive and especially chicken might be in short supply but I also value my money and what it can buy me and this was just not a good value at all.
Not sure I'll go back there and that is disappointing to me as I really like their Mei fun and...
