General experience? Average to slightly disappointed. As a small business owner myself I really wanted this place to be good, as I feel that way about all small, local start-up businesses. Im sure it cost them a fortune in both money, time and stress to get this place up and running and I wish them the best in their new business venture. However, our first visit tonight will probably be our last. Our biggest observation: there is a total lack of service, aside from the kid at the register taking our money. Funny how that works. We had to do everything else ourselves. From getting our own food, to filling our own cup to clearing our table when we finished.
I was prompted by the debit card reader to add a tip to our bill when we paid. This was PRIOR to sitting and eating, which was odd. Why would I tip anyone a dime for food I hadnt eaten yet or services that dont exist??? That alone was off putting enough for me to leave no tip at all. Sorry guys. Tips are not entitlements. And I have ZERO problem hitting the "No Tip" button on the screen.
We had dinner there on Tuesday the 14th. We were the only patrons inside. Kid at the register was very friendly and surprisingly polite. A VERY nice touch! We ordered, filled our cup, grabbed some plastic ware and sat down. Waited a bit longer than expected for being fast food. Suddenly we hear my name being yelled, "Jay, order up!" Weren't quite sure what to do. Werent sure if that was a signal to come get our food or a signal to an employee to bring it to us. Ultimately after about two minutes I had to get up and get it myself. Kinda awkward. Passed by the kid at the register whom I actually thought would have taken the initiative and brought our food to our table. He was sitting behind the counter fiddling with something instead. Could probably be doing something more constructive with his time, like serving the customers and earning that tip I spoke of earlier. Its not like there was anyone else in there for him to tend to.
Food was average to slightly below. As many others have said, the fish appeared to be bulk frozen fish from Costco. Not that there's anything wrong with that. It actually was quite good. Hot and crispy. The fries and coleslaw however were a different story. The fries were hot, but not "fresh out of the fryer" hot. The texture seemed like they had definitely been cooked in some manner, then cooled off, then reheated again...? We've all eaten fries that have been reheated after the fact in the microwave, right? They were kinda like that. I dont know exactly what it was but you could tell they werent fresh out of scalding hot oil. Once they cooled at our table they were almost inedible. Cole slaw was dry. Desperately lacking the slaw sauce. Ketchup on the tables was room temperature. Which for me personally is a big NO NO!! Ketchup has got to be cold!!
Place inside is quant and cozy. Done up in a typical fish and chips style atmosphere. Checkered tablecloths, maritime decor on the walls, and a very casual atmosphere. Our final receipt listed our items ordered but didnt show the prices or the final price of the meal. Very odd. All in all it wasnt a waste of money but it wasnt enough to make us go out of our way to patronize again. Good luck...
Read moreBorn and raised on the Gulf coast, you appreciate a good seafood restaurant. Since moving to WA state 5 years ago, I've not found any that made me homesick like this place does.
Stepping into this once residential house converted to restaurant, you're taken back to a time of warm familiarity, with visible regalia of a true blue collar nautical eatery. The lack of blaring TV's, fancy decor, or technology for that matter, really do make you feel like you're eating in someone's home and not a souless corporate restaurant.
I dined amongst strangers, but this mom and pop place felt like family. I listened to stories, and watched kids color as I dined on lightly fried cod, tangy ketchup, and seasoned fries. This place felt like the many "fish shacks" I dined in growing up, but it's not a shack... it's a home... regardless if it's converted to a restaurant. The roof held many memories of the lives before, and I hope it continues to hold memories for many more customers to come.
What a great place to visit, eat delicious fish, and feel like family. The staff was completely engaging, and welcoming. I look forward to my next return soon. Thanks for taking me back...
Read moreIt's been a while since I've had some fish and chips. After hiking in Gold Bar, my friend and I planned to stop by Monroe Fish and Chips since it's on the way back. It's a really small and cozy spot to grab some grub. Coming inside you can really see the nautical theme throughout the place which was a nice touch.
I had the combo meal which was a combination of two pieces of seafood, I opted for cod and clams along with my fries and coleslaw. Whatever seasoning they use, it's just the right amount and my combo basket was so delicious! Perfect amount of crisp for both the seafood and fries. Since I opted for clams, they did provide me with some cocktail sauce on the side. They definitely have me wanting to try the shrimp for my next visit.
I think they give the right amount of food in comparison with some places loading up on the fries to makeup for lack of fish. Also all the right condiments such as vinegar, tabasco, and ketchup is at each table along with napkin bins.
The worker at the cashier was very friendly and I could see she was making sure everyone was enjoying her meal.
Definitely try and support this place if you're ever...
