Island Delight — Restaurant in Montgomery

Love it! Exceeded my expectations! They are not servers, they are Tour Guides. Pretty awesome concept and definitely different in Montgomery Alabama. My husband and I are here for the very first time. We heard about this place through Google search and decided to check it out today. I was a little bit skeptical because I typically don't do independent restaurants. This was definitely an experience. I absolutely love the decor on the outside of the building. The inside was definitely amazing also decor. Beyond friendly staff. Very clean interior. Very professional look. It doesn't seem like there is one single piece of trash on the floor, so the highlight again very clean. It seems like a very family oriented place that'll get to know you. The owners and staff take pride. The menu is easy to read. They have very classy desserts such as red velvet cake, chocolate rum cake, butter rum cake, rum raisin cake and strawberry cheesecake etc. Typical menu item is Caribbean food with Homestyle sides. I ordered a pineapple guava drink. I thought that it was a regular drink but it turns out that it was actually imported from Jamaica. Husband got a peach tea, best peach tea ever. There is also an option to order delivery and carryout via WAITER. There are TVs on the wall big screens. There is reggae music playing over the speakers for music, jamming. Food is wonderful. Atmosphere is an awesome relaxing vybe however!!!!!!!!! I’m sick and tired of the employees literally ignoring your presence. Countless amounts of times I have spent money here and each time that I enter the establishment, I’m not acknowledged. Today, it took 15 minutes after employees walked back and forth for them just to say “have you ordered yet?”. I don’t want to make a big issue out of it but it becomes draining when you enter these establishments and see people who look just like yourself only for them to be rude and overlook you. I was the only person in line, waited for an employee to acknowledge me because god forbid I ask for some decent service, I’ll get an attitude like I’ve done something wrong. Also, the menu advertises beef and chicken patties. It amazes me how I have to wait 10/15 minutes just to become visible to the workers then when they FINALLY get to me, I have to wait 30 minutes for a chicken patti because they do not have them on hand as they do the beef. Just wow. A whole hour just for 1 Patti is concerning. At that point I just left. Not everyone eats beef and pork. And then you have to pay for parking LOL. You’d think they’d move with just a tad bit of urgency considering the money that customers spend with them including myself. Again, the food is GREAT. Atmosphere/environment is wonderful. But the service is mediocre. I’ve been coming here for about 2/3 years now and not once has a worker actually smiled. I’ve been to Island Delight twice, both times during lunch to dine in. It seems that dining in is quicker than waiting in the pickup line, which can get pretty backed up.

The “Just Peachy” smoothie is absolutely delicious. I’ve also tried their canned juices—and they’re so good I had to grab extras to take home!!

Both times, I ordered the oxtails with rice, cabbage, and island slaw (slaw not pictured). The slaw is sweet and, I think, has apples in it. The cabbage is pretty standard—nothing to fancy. The oxtails are incredibly flavorful and tender.

My only complaint is the portion size. The oxtail plate comes with a smaller serving of meat compared to other dishes. For example, my Dad got the curry chicken and received a larger portion. Next time, I plan to try the curry goat. While I really enjoy the oxtails, they feel a bit too pricey for the amount of meat you get.

The servers were wonderful being very friendly and attentive. I will say the two ladies working the checkout stations seemed less welcoming, but it didn’t ruin the experience since I dined in.
