I’ve eaten at Ballo one other time in 2016, and it was decent, so I figured I’d give it another try, but tonight I wasn’t impressed.
We sat at our table for 25 minutes before anyone came to take our order, and then 2 tables were sat next to us, and they took those tables orders before taking ours. I ordered Sparkling Water, and they brought it to the table next to us, who seemed delighted to get free $12 sparkling water, as they were a higher class than us, and wearing nicer clothing (maybe they’re regulars or something, or influencers doing a reel for them, idk) That table was treated like they were royalty, and like influencers like the NYCVIPgirls, and Burkin Boys. Maybe they were somebody special, but that’s how all customers should be treated. That rubbed me the wrong way, because it starts to feel like they treat some people like high class, and then others as low class.
As far as the food, it was good, but I ordered my steak medium well, and it was as rare as can be. I ate in anyways, and I’ll admit, it was amazing. Normally rare steak makes me grossed out, but this one had some kind of seasons infused in it, where it was delightful. Our waiter was a nice guy and all, but it rubbed me the wrong way how the table next to me was being treated like celebrities (not by the waiter, but other staff in the establishment) (and it wasn’t the waiter’s fault with the Sparkling Water, it was the bar delivering it to wrong table, and the table accepting it because they’re such big time people they get free stuff), when all they ordered was one lasagna and split it, and my dinner order was almost $200, and that table got my sparkling water. I didn’t make any issues out of it, and I even paid the $12 because I didn’t feel like waiting to have the check redone. Also the prices on the menu were wrong, and the Steak was $5 more than the menu said, and then there’s a $12 Mohegan Sun Tax on our bill. Like wtf is that? Don’t order the olives and Parmesan, it’s a waste of money. $14 for 2 meatballs seems ridiculous. My steak was $61, the menu said $57. $4 for the special butter. And then we paid $12 for bread, $9 for olives and Parmesan, and $57 for Lobster Spaghetti.
I ate at Old Homestead Steakhouse at the Borgata in AC and the service was far better and the food much better, for the same price range, and actually cheaper. That’s how the service should be here for the price you’re paying, but the service here is like a Chili’s. The service at Old Homestead was better than places like Joseph’s Steakhouse. It’s like those private Steak Clubs in NYC, for the same price as this place. I was expecting this place to be like Carmines in NYC, and I’m being fair to the establishment, they’re overcharging for the experience they’re providing. That’s my take on it. I’m not saying it’s bad or anything, but all the Restaurants in Mohegan seem to fall short if you’re expecting a Michelin Star experience. (I’ve never eaten at Tao or Michael Jordan’s so they’re exempt from this statement).
All in all, the restaurant is beautiful, but it’s kind of a ripoff, but the food is good. The staff is friendly but you’re not getting that Michelin Star service you would expect paying these prices, unless you’re the table that was next to us for some reason. Maybe it’s because we didn’t have a reservation, or because we were casually dressed because we were just venturing through the Casino, and decided to eat here on a whim.
I can say confidently, I won’t give this place another try because I just don’t like the nickel and diming, and the service should be like a David Burke Steakhouse, or like Hells Kitchen if you’re charging Michelin Star prices. Definitely not Michelin Star quality service but you’re paying Michelin Star prices.
All in all, the food is great, the restaurant is beautiful, and you’ll have a good time, but expect sticker shock when you get the bill, and don’t expect to be treated like a king, unless you come in looking like an influencer with a...
Read moreI took my wife here for our 1 year wedding anniversary and the experience was nothing short of perfect. Everything from the warm, attentive greeting at the door to the unbelievably well spoken and very knowledgeable waiter who knew the menu inside and out. The cocktails were made for the lips of angels and the wine list has something for everyone. The food was fresh, you could taste every ingredient, as if specifically picked to be a part of that dish to bring the flavor to its full potential. Very well done an all fronts and I shall be taking my wife here again.
Edit: It has been three years since my first review. My wife and I enjoyed a fantastic dinner here for our first anniversary. The past two anniversaries however I have been away serving in the US Navy. Actually I have missed not only our anniversary but also the birthdays of both our children and my wife, for two years in a row. Not unlike many service members. I am writing this while onboard the Aircraft Carrier Dwight D. Eisenhower. By the time I reach home again I will have been at sea for 19 out of the past 24 months. It is a great honor to serve my country, and an honor to aid in the withdrawal of our troops from Afghanistan. But my wife, honestly she is the one who has taken the biggest burden and the hardest job. Raising and caring for our two kids, alone, away from family and amidst a pandemic, for two years she has been MY rock and I am so inspired by her. Anyway, the reason for this message is I am unable to find an email on the Ballo website and this is the only way I can think of getting in touch with the management. So hello, I am Petty Officer 3rd Class Jeff Boniface and I am a huge fan of your establishment. I am returning home and will be visiting family up north while on leave, and I would love to surprise my wife with a dinner at your restaurant. I will make reservations online of course once Im back in the states but I would love to have a point of contact, someone I could coordinate with perhaps, to help make the evening for my wife spectacular. She has endured, and carried all the weight and responsibility of being a parent on her shoulders while I have been at sea. Its impossible to give her the time we have missed while I have been away. But for just one night I want her to feel completely taken care of, wanting for nothing. I want her to be served and "wined and dined" I want her to feel totally relaxed and comfortable and I want her to feel as beautiful as I see her. Sir/Ma'am, whoever is reading this who works at Ballo, my wife and I had this same experience the last time we were at your restaurant and I would love to have that experience again. My internet is limited while on the ship however I am able to get on at least for a few minutes a day. I will be checking back to see if there is any response and really look forward to setting something up for my wife. Very Respectfully, Petty Officer 3rd...
Read moreUpdated Review: In short, the quality here is gone and not worth your money. Find a new favorite Italian restaurant, because this one is no longer mine...and one that doesn't charge for their bread that is for the table! Before, they didn't and it was better than what we received last night.
I very much enjoyed this restaurant and came any time I was able for special occasions. They have completely changed their menu and quality of their ingredients, and it is obvious they have done so for a quick buck. They've changed their menu to reduce prices for customers which sounds good but they lack in quality AND quantity. I understand it is a restaurant in the casino, and they've changed to appeal to those wanting what seems like a luxury dining experience but not wanting to pay the hefty price. It's just tragic because not only did they get rid of a lot of favorite items between me and my husband ( and reading through reviews, a lot of other's favorites), the experience is no longer there. The care the owner had is once gone and replaced with wanting a quick buck. I will sadly not be returning. I'd advise you look else where for a restaurant worth your time, because this one has changed so much it is no longer worth the wait time + price. Thank you for reading. I will keep my old review written below with the pictures attached so you can get a grasp of what it once was like but that seems to be a thing of the past.
Old Review: Was taken here for my 21st birthday and now back for Valentine's day the next year, quality still great and amazing. Service was good, she answered all our questions and listed the specials of the day including lobster ravioli. We didn't get it but they sounded really good. I got a Blood Orange cocktail and my bf a martini, no appetizers, just 2 entrees. He ordered the filet mignon that comes with brussel sprouts (sauteed I assume) and the gnocchi, with portobello mushrooms, prosciutto and black truffle shavings on top!
The wait was VERY short. We went the day before Valentine's day though so it wasn't very busy.
He ordered his filet mignon medium rare and it came out perfect. He was worried it wouldn't be enough to fill him but it was a perfect portion with the brussel sprouts that were oddly sweet in the exterior leaves which was delicious. The gnocchi was hot and fresh, the portobello mushrooms were great flavor as well as the prosciutto. We got desert, the Expresso Brownie with Caramel and Expresso foam, and the waitress said they also had red velvet cannolis for Valentine's day so we tried those too.
Brownie was hot and tasted amazing, the cannolis were okay. We thought it would taste like red velvet cake but it just tasted like overly sweet vanilla frosting dyed pink. Everything else was amazing though. And for a expensive restaurant our total was only 136$, which is pretty fair for the quality....
