I loved stopping for coffee here, and originally rated 5-stars. Unfortunately, in the past few months they’ve made some changes that have deterred me from stopping in.
Their prices changed pretty suddenly, and drastically too. $8 for a small or $9 for a large coffee. They’re no longer charging for alternative milks but are still charging an extra fee for to-go cups, which I found a bit odd.
The bakery items increased in price by $1-2 each, and I found that the portion sizes had shrunk by a noticeable amount. I didn’t realize until my last stop on that they also charge a fee to put bakery items in a paper to-go bag.
I don’t know if they’re trying to reduce waste or encourage people to spend time in the coffee shop instead of taking items to go. Either way, it’s gotten to be one of the more expensive coffee shops in the area.
On top of the pricing, it’s gotten incredibly busy (which is of course great for them as a business). Unless you get there the moment they open, wait times can be excessive. I’ve waited anywhere from 10 to 40 minutes just to place an order, and there isn’t anywhere comfortable to wait, you just end up crammed in the shared entrance for the coffee shop and apartment complex.
Edit: I can understand an enhanced cost for specialty products. As someone who does not consume dairy, my experience as a customer isn’t enhanced by your “glass bottle milk from a grass-fed dairy”. There is no discernible difference between the non-dairy milks used here and what is used in most any other coffee shop (local or chain).
Customers will dictate if a product is worth paying a premium for with their dollars. If you are confident that your product is superior, there shouldn’t be any reason to spend the time and effort defending it under people’s genuine reviews...
Read morePicture the fanciest, ritziest, trendiest, most upscale coffee shop ever… 20Below is not that. It’s BETTER. I’ve been frequenting coffee shops since I was in high school but 20Below is by far my favorite. I’ll start with the coffee, because that is what you’re probably here for. They roast their own beans and I thoroughly enjoy their espresso. If you’re sensitive to caffeine (like me) I usually do half-caf and it doesn’t get me jittery. They make some syrups in house. My favorite thing to order is the caramel latte because it is so smooth!! I often come around breakfast to get a yummy toast or pastry! Everything (and I mean everything) is delicious. I could literally spin around and point to something in the case and be wowed. Maybe I’ll try that next time actually… But some other things that are important to honor about 20Below, their staff is friendly, welcoming, and conversational. You don’t get the feeling that they’re in a rush to serve the next customer or that you’re just money to them. The environment in the shop is homey, bustling, and lively. They use a lot of local materials in their design. I remember they were asking for chairs before they opened the new shop and people brought in their old dining room chairs. It creates a fun vibe in there. You should go to 20Below. You won’t regret it. If you go when it is actually 20° (or more) below 0°F, they give you a free drink for next time. Kind of a fun challenge if...
Read moreMy wife had come here a few times and loved it, so she had been wanting to bring me. I was not impressed at all, and neither was she this time. I'm not sure if it was because it was almost closing on a Sunday or just the barista that was working at this time. I always like to try the espresso of a cafe before getting anything else, so I ordered espresso and my wife got a mocha, ordered a cheese danish and sourdough bread to take home as well. The danish was good, wish I had gotten it warmed up though.
The espresso, the sole thing responsible for a good coffee shop, was beyond terrible, blotchy looking and no crema. At first it was barely even warm and I told the barista. A couple minutes later she brings me back what I'm fairly certain was the same exact thing just warmed up in the microwave. It was the same plate and cup with spoon I had used just minutes before, and did not look like a newly pulled shot. So now it was at least hot, but extremely bitter, sour and obviously over extracted. My wife's latte was not good either, she said it was much better on her previous visits. I'm sure the barista was just not trained properly or overwhelmed or something, but it's not a good look for a cafe. For a place that roasts their own coffee and has a wide variety of brewing methods, it's not a good first impression. I might give it another chance if someone more capable is...
