My husband and I visited China Master for the first time in October and decided to come back last week. We drove from Midland and this time was a lot different than last time. When we arrived it was a little busy, we waited only around 5 minutes for a table. We got seated and someone grabbed us water within 10 minutes. We placed our food order right around 6pm. Around 6:30 we noticed it was weird that we did not receive an appetizer yet, considering it wasn't as busy now. a new table arrived around when we noticed we didn't get an appetizer and they received their appetizer within 5 minutes of ordering. We flagged a bus person down because we could not find our server and he said they were busy and be patient...so now 2 more tables received food within 10 minutes or coming in and people are getting meals. Our server came over and asked if we would like to order...so we explained we already order but yes, would place another order... He said he thinks they lost the other order. Offered us some egg drop soup. I do not like it, so I declined mine. within 15 minutes we got appetizers and meals. At this point it had been an hour and a half since we arrived. I noticed my general tso chicken looked and tasted just like my husbands orange chicken. The server said it is the same just orange chicken has MORE orange zest than general tso. It didn't have any spice to it all. They said there was nothing they could do since it was what I ordered even though I remember what it tasted like before and it looked nothing like that. But they just argued with me. At the end of it all, they gave us just under $4 off of our bill and gave my husband an egg drop soup. Said they were sorry and never even came back for a refill of water (By this time there were only 2 other tables there)

Over the holiday, my wife and I flew to northern Michigan to celebrate my dad’s 91st birthday. We rented a small car at the airport and drove to Traverse City, stopping in the small town of Mt. Pleasant to get gas. By then it was already noon, and since we had rushed to catch our flight in the morning without breakfast, we were starving. We found a Chinese restaurant and walked in—right away I noticed photos of a world-renowned chef and a bunch of awards hanging on the wall. I thought, how could a chef this amazing be hiding out in a little town like this? I took a closer look at the menu and immediately ordered two of the Chef Jan Specials: the Mongolian Triple Feast and the Spicy Gulf Jumbo Shrimp. I also got a Tsingtao beer, since my wife was driving the rest of the way. While waiting for the food, I got curious and chatted with the server—turns out, the famous chef and the owner are both originally from Taiwan and immigrated to the U.S. over 50 years ago. Long story short, the food was incredibly fresh and absolutely delicious. We were lucky to enjoy signature dishes from one of Asia’s top chefs—definitely an unforgettable experience and totally worth the detour.

I’m a retired high school teacher who loves Asian food. I used to teach English in cities like New York, Philly, and Chicago. I travel freely now in my spare time. Last week, while passing through Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, I stopped at an Asian restaurant. The walls were covered with photos and awards from top culinary competitions — World Culinary Championship, German Olympic Culinary Competition, and more. It was my first time eating at a place run by a world-class chef, and I was curious. The server recommended the Chef Jan Special, but I stuck with my favorite, Kung Pao Chicken with Peanuts. It was beautifully presented with a little red flower and smelled amazing. The flavors were unlike anything I’d had before — absolutely delicious. Back at the hotel, I was still savoring that meal. If you’re a food lover, this spot is a must-visit. One of the best dining experiences I’ve ever had. Thankful for this experience!

Edit.THIRD VISIT I'm going to reduce the rating to 3 stars. This third visit things were not the same as the first visit or second. We were in a group of 5. The service was excellent as our waiter was prompt and right on cue. Food was not real hot. The homemade steamed dumplings were the correct temp. And this crispy beef was good but took quite a long time arriving late long after everyone else received their food, almost done eating. Both orders of Szechuan pork and Szechuan chicken were not even remotely close to Szechuan in style. The were no Sichuan peppercorns or red chili peppers in either dish. It was a strange combination of a while sauce. I mentioned I ordered medium hot spicy and the waitress argued about it possibly being too spicy from what I wanted and what I originally ordered. It didn't make any sense. The last 2 visits, my food it arrived with no spice or heat, I always order LoMein medium spicy hot. It's almost as if they are afraid to serve food with some spicy heat.

I'll give them one more try to get my order correct before they strike out.

FIRST VISIT It seemed like we all waited quite some time for China Master to open, but finally it has...I must say I'm quite impressed with China Master. The food we ordered was top notch and was just right for the price.

I ordered the House LoMein medium spicy and it was excellent, except not medium spicy hot. But it's the best in town IMO. My partner ordered the Sesame beef and he said it was the best he'd ever had, However the fried rice was the only thing that simply had no taste. I wouldn't have known it was supposed to be fried rice. Looked like white rice with a few light drops of soy...

Really wanted to try this place since I'd been hearing good about it. However my girlfriend and her mom had had a couple bad experiences, so we were nervous trying to go there again. Regardless I convinced them to go. Food was okay. I enjoyed my food, her mom was iffy, and my girlfriend did not due to it making her feel sick. She politely asked if she could have it taken off and we were only told we could substitute it because quote "it's not our fault you didn't like it." Which, wow. My girlfriend substituted for two eggrolls which didn't even total to the price of her initial meal just to try and be nice to me and her mom since she knew she wouldn't be able to enjoy any other food after that. When we did get our bill, they still charged us for the 15 dollar meal instead of the 8 dollars the two eggrolls she substituted for. We did not leave a tip and then they looked at the bill, coming up to us asking if their service was that bad. Which again, wow. Well here is your answer I didn't say in the restaurant. Yes, yes it was. You would have had our business again if it wasn't for that. We gave you all another chance, were polite as can be, and weren't asking a tall order. If they didn't want to take the meal off they could have been nicer about it and simply put, yes you got that fifteen dollars out of us that way, but now you're not getting our business ever again, meaning in the long term you will have lost more money than you have gained. This has been the worst experience we've ever had with a restaurant out of anywhere we've been in the state and we are extremely disappointed. If you value your time, money, and culinary satisfaction, do...
