A delightful German experience hidden away in a strip mall! Having worked in Berlin, I can attest to the authenticity of the cuisine. But unlike literally every German waiter or barkeep I encountered in Deutschland, the service at Nick’s was warm and friendly. 1- The main fare was just perfect. I recommend the Bratwurst appetizer. Very filling, enough to share with someone, and featured at least three different, flavorful items. Any schnitzel I saw or tasted was scrumptious. And the spaetzel reminded me of how even mac and cheese can be elevated to fine dining if done right! The Diet Coke I ordered came in a tiny Euro-sized glass bottle, which I polished off in 2-3 sips. Annoyingly authentic lol I didn’t try any other drinks, but they had a large selection of beer and spirits that I may sample next time I’m in town! 2- The dessert we tried was amazing. ā€œSpaghetti Eisā€ was vanilla ice cream put through a strainer so it looked like spaghetti, replete with a red berry ā€œspaghetti sauceā€ and shaved white chocolate for the ā€œParmesanā€ on top. Light. Sweet. Whimsical! 3- It was affordable, maybe a tad more than you’d pay at an American steakhouse, but that’s to be expected. 4- The interior was both cozy and classy with chandeliers, German photo art, and what turned out to be a booked up reservation list that we weren’t on 😬 Thankfully, we were able to sit at the bar, which may have been even better, in hindsight. We got to speak with the staff throughout and every one one of them were so friendly, and especially kind to my dinner guest, my ten year-old daughter. In closing, don’t miss out on Nick’s! If you’re passing through the Charleston area or are lucky enough to live here, give them a try. Just remember to make that reservation!

THE BEST RED WINE I’VE EVER HAD! Now that I have your attention, I’m excited to share that our dinner at Nick’s was life changing. This is truly the best food we’ve had since moving to Charleston. It was packed for Schnitzel night so we sat outside and had the BEST time! They have lights, heaters, and blankets which made it a super intimate and enjoyable experience. Forewarning I am not a sauerkraut, red wine, or plum fan— but they’ve made me question this. Things we got that I can’t wait to eat again: - Bavarian bratwurst as a starter - Beef stroganoff and JƤgerschnitzel - Plum streusel cake (request it with ice cream) And the sweet red wine that I can’t stop thinking about is Schlink Haus’s Dornfelder. Nick personally came out to meet us. It’s very obvious he has a huge heart for his restaurant and will go above and beyond for his patrons. Leander was supposed to be our server, but immediately felt more like a friend. Despite us being outside, he was super attentive to us and went above and beyond to make sure our date night was special. What we didn’t tell him was that this was the first time in 2 months we’d been able to go out for our weekly date night. His friendliness, hospitality, and knowledge about our dishes made our night incredible, and we will definitely be asking for him when we return. PS: Tuesdays and Wednesdays are Schnitzel Day with $5 off the pork dishes. Thursdays are 50% off wine ($100 and under). Would give 100 stars if I could.

We were waiting for colder weather to try Nick's, and now that we have it, we went. Overall, the food, service and atmosphere were very good. Starting with the highlights, our server was extremely warm, attentive, and gracious. The restaurant is small and feels cozy on a winter night. The beer and wine we had were absolutely fantastic, and we felt very happy with our choices (a dark lager and a light, not too dry, not too sweet Riesling). Standouts for the food were the pork medallions with a portobello sauce, served with spaetzle and bacon green beans. Excellent dish! The apple strudel was also very good. Bread dumpling with mushroom sauce and side salad with creamy garlic dressing were both tasty. On the uneven side, the special lamb dish, we had to send back. We were surprised to see lamb on a German restaurant's menu. We didn't know they knew how to do lamb. Well, the short answer is, they don't. We replaced that dish with a schnitzel with ham and cheese that came covered in a bolognese type sauce. One of us thought the combination worked well, the other did not. However, we agreed it was flavorful and well-prepared. Our server was very apologetic about the lamb dish and very kind about the situation. We don't like sending things back and felt bad, but at the price point of Nick's, you really need to be eating something good. Fortunately, there are many very tasty things from which to choose!

We had an amazing dinner Saturday evening November 18, 2023 at Nick’s German Restaurant. We were staying in a hotel nearby so we walked there not knowing if we’d get in without a reservation. They were very accommodating and offered us a few options with plenty of time to dine. Considering how nice the weather was we decided to eat outside. Our server Michelle was most attentive and friendly. She went over the specials and explained some of the German dishes we weren’t familiar with. Owner Nick came out and greeted us and he was so nice. He genuinely acted like he was happy to see us. We chatted about Germany and our visits there and where he was from. He told us his remarkable story and journey to starting this restaurant. Michelle also was quite personable and told us her story and how she wound up in South Carolina. We remarked if we didn’t live so far we’d be friends with her. That’s the type of person she is. Nick came back a few times to check on us. Most importantly the food was amazing and delicious. We started with the bratwurst appetizer and considering we are from Wisconsin it was as good if not better than any bratwurst back home. I had the chicken spaetzle

and it was so good, and more than enough in the serving. My husband Chuck ordered the pork shank and it was served with mashed potatoes and creamed sauerkraut. Chuck said the meat was so tender it could fall off the bone. And it was one of the best meals he had in years. We live in Wisconsin and in Pawleys Island South Carolina so we will definitely be back, and we will be bringing family and friends.
