There were five of us and we ordered sushi and udon dishes. The food was good, but the server we had needs lessons in basic table/serving manners. I know these are harsh words, but I felt very uncomfortable the whole night and even now waking up with this. I should have walked out! Instead of using a tray, she carried the soup bowls with her hands, and the thumbs touched the broth. Between her trips to pick up another plate, I saw the server touched the back of her coworker's pants. Her sleeve touched another member's sushi. One sushi dish had a hair, a server used a napkin to remove the hair, when I felt uncomfortable with their manners and asked to have the dish replaced, the server brought the plate back out after bringing it to the back. The smear from the efforts to remove the hair is still visible on the side! I asked for a soy plate, our server brought three plates with her thumb pressed on the center of the top plate, then she used her one hand with fingers all over the plates to move them around the table. Another member was uncomfortable how the server leaned over her. Too many other issues with the server!
I asked to speak with the manager, she blocked it and took the one dish with the hair off the tab. I told her I am not interested in the discount, I rather provide feedback. The server was defensive and lied that she switched out the dish! I didn't get to speak to anyone, this is horrible! I took the time to write this review and hope that it can be useful to the owner.
I am really surprised that this serving manners hasn't gotten the attention of public health! I don't even serve food to my...
Read moreI make a lot of sushi at home. I'm a fanatic who learned by sitting at the sushi bars while on business trips and taking notes then practiced step-by-step in my kitchen. Pick a particular sushi item and I could yak for an hour about various ways a mediocre vs. good vs. great sushi chef will make it.
I'm very impressed with the sushi at Satsuma. They are making traditional Japanese style with real dedication across a wide ranging menu. Service is excellent. Fish is high quality, very fresh. I think they are in the top three in South Bay in terms of traditional Japanese sushi restaurants.
Sharing my thoughts:
We love: Musashi, Megabyte, Flaming Dragon rolls. I'll add more recommendations as we return and try their all their rolls. We love rolls w/salmon but thought their Salmon Paradise roll was just too much salmon flavor (and mayo) all in one roll. Their Toro (fatty tuna) nigiri is the bomb - sooo good. Their Unagi (grilled BBQ freshwater eel) is one of the very best I've had, and I've had grilled style Unagi at least 30 different sushi restaurants I was thankful their sushi chef was willing to make Spicy Hotate in my requested style (Gunkan style w/slice avocado, spicy mayo, tabiko); it was fantastic! The Agedashi Tofu is fabulous
We're making Satsuma our go-to restaurant for satisfying the crave...
Read moreMy wife and I came in during date night. We'd seen this place numerous times and the ratings made it seem like an excellent place. We entered and got sat in the corner. After ordering water and our appetizer we waited +10 minutes for someone. Ultimately, my wife had to approach the staff member who sat us and he asked someone to take our order. The restaurant wasn't very full when we walked in. It did start getting full (during the time in which we were waiting to order). All the guests that came after us got served right away. I had to wait till the food came out to ask for a refill (which came when we were done and ready to pay). Even to pay we had to wait awhile. Not sure if it's because we were the only Latinos in the restaurant or not. Regardless, we did not feel welcome.
Final thoughts: The food was delicious but the service atrocious.
