If you are craving raw fish in mountain view area, this is one of the better options with a good turnover.
We get takeout here often because it is nearby, and they do a decent job packaging the food. We appreciate that they separate the hot food and cold foods in separate plastic bags.
We have tried almost everything on the menu, and recommend the sushi, Nigiri over the cooked food. We usually order California rolls with 'real crab', some yellowtail, rainbow roll, unagi is a hit or miss sometimes good, sometimes mostly slimy rubbery skin. Rolls often split apart or fall apart but for a quick and easy to-go meal, it's okay.
We have tried the collars and felt they were not the freshest. The smelts felt like a major rip-off, texture was tough and dry. Reminded us of canned smoked fish that had freezer burn.
The pork and chicken tends to feature a lot of gristle. Sometimes there are unexpected broken bone shards, but that just tells you that you are getting 'real' meat, right?
If you are desperate for fried chicken the chicken karaage is a generous portion. I have succumbed to it's greasy, crunchy, crispy charms, even whilst complaining that the fat wasn't rendered, frying oil smoky and beyond needing a change, and coating was burnt bitter. Because when the left on skin is rendered and fried properly it's chicken chicharon!
If you are craving crispy fried foods, they definitely fry it to a crisp on the outside.
That being said, we always pay for eating the fried food here later, they really need to improve the quality of their frying oil. (In general all the silicon valley restaurants need to).
The crispy fried tonkatsu portion is also generous, but not the sauce. They give you two sauce packets (like soy sauce) and it's enough to dip at most a quarter of your tonkatsu slices.
The ginger slices here tend to be stringy and chewy, not juicy and crisp.
Once again, they use the ubiquitous cheapest of the cheap splintery chopsticks!
If dining in, there is a waiting list just inside to your right, then you wait outside until your party is called. We didn't know and were waiting to be helped, and the people behind us wrote their name first, and were seated first. And of course we then had to wait awhile...
Read moreI really like this small sushi joint. Have been here many times. I was a bit nervous before my first visit given some of the complaints online about the fish not being fresh, but I generally have had no such problem, maybe because I usually only order raw items off the list labeled “Fresh!” on the whiteboard. The shima aji, tai, uni, black cod, ocean trout, toro, and kanpachi have been consistently excellent. (If splurging, I recommend the uni over the toro. The toro is buttery and subtle but at $18 per order is not as good a deal as the uni, which is only $15 and in my opinion tastes better.) The unagi, hirame, and kappa maki have also been good. The aji (horse mackerel) was slightly fishy as God intended. I once ordered the hamachi by accident even though it was not on the “Fresh” list and found it to be a bit fishy so it’s important to order off the whiteboard. The only item off the whiteboard I have not liked so much was the anago, which was not broiled and a bit fishy (large pieces though). I found the seaweed salad a bit sweet. Green tea went well with the meal. The servers are generally nice and professional although sometimes they can make you feel rushed. I generally like the guys making the sushi as well. They can be more engaged and communicative than typical...
Read moreCame here on a Thursday for a quick lunch! Your whole party must be present to be seated. Plenty of parking at 11:30 since it's on the outer edge of downtown Mountain View. They get packed fast, so plan accordingly.
What we got: Super special chirashi Sake don Salmon avocado roll Negihama roll Salmon miso soup
Oh my gosh I was SO HUNGRY. I've frequented the San Jose branch dozens of times, but this was my second time patronizing this location (first time for COVID take out). Everything came out quickly so we were in and out in less than 30 minutes!
The salmon miso soup came out first as a complimentary item to the entrees. Never had this before, but it had plenty of veggies and salmon (with bones). I thought the soup was a little salty, so it wasn't my favorite.
The rolls were great! The rice was slightly warm, just the way I like it and the fish was excellent. We gobbled these up before starting on the entrees.
I almost always get the sake don from Tomi and it's never let me down. I think they serve a better rice to fish ratio here vs San Jose, but the thickness and quality of the salmon is about the same. I ALWAYS enjoy the last bite with the shiso leaf. 🤤
For a quick, reliable, and delicious weekday lunch, check out Tomi, but be sure to get...
