I have always loved Concannon's and never had an issue with their quality food or customer service. We haven't visited much since the beginning of the pandemic and have just started to get back to buying donuts on occasion. Since we have returned I have noticed the customer service quality has dropped significantly... it is no longer the welcoming place it used to be. Unfortunately today has marked the last time we will be in to support the longtime local business. My Sister and I went in this afternoon to inquire about reserving tables for a bridal shower brunch 3 weeks out and even though we have reserved in the past were told (after we had to request a manager) they do not allow reserved tables any longer. Mind you... they no longer serve food other than the bakery items you can purchase at the bakery counter and a limited coffee and drink menu so their table area is usually empty. We said okay, well... we will take our chances and could we order a cake? The same manager said yes but since it is three weeks away they would only be able to decorate a cake with balloons or maybe flowers because their only cake decorator is on vacation and will not be back until after our get together date. I was thinking "this is Concannon's Bakery right??". We have always bought our special occasion cakes and desserts without issue from this bakery and shared their name with all of our friends and family from out of town. It was almost like the manager was trying to tell us don't come here... we don't want your business. So therefore, we took our business to another local business called Made in Muncie. They were so happy to accommodate us and were as surprised as we were to hear about the customer service at Concannon's. Not sure what has changed... the bakery was not busy as there were only a total of 5 customers in the whole building. They seemed to have an abundance of employees standing around... maybe she was just having a bad day. I do know she won't have to worry about having 15 women from out of town buying pastries, eating cake, and ordering coffee and drinks in...
Read moreMaking my way through Indiana, I made it a point to try several different (all well loved) sugar cream pies, and I can honestly say that all 4 were big-time winners in my book. Of the 4 I tried, I did have a very favorite, and I can't say that this was that, but it was definitely on par with all the other (non-favorite but still super-yummy) entries! And while I was a bit disappointed that I couldn't get just a single slice here, their full size pies are SO reasonable priced (especially considering how delicious mine was) that in hindsight, I definitely ended up better off having "no choice" but to spring for a full pie. I took it home, had pie for almost a full week, and was still just as in love with it on the last day as I was on the first. :D Had I not ended up buying that full pie, I would have been super-tempted by many of their other amazing-looking offerings as well, but that just means that now I have something to look forward to next time!
Update: I did indeed have something to look forward to this next time! Revisiting in March after making several other Indiana stops for pie day, this time I tried one of their donuts, and it was even better than their delicious pie! AND, they even customized it for me: Making me a vanilla frosted version of their chunky monkey donut with their super-yummy banana filling. So good! And for some reason (much appreciated) they actually gave me 2 for the price of one, once again making this stop an incredible bang for my buck!! I will definitely be back at some point for another helping of that specific treat, and look forward to trying at least one other new goodie next time...
Read moreConcannon's Bakery has been a a go to shop since my childhood. I can recall being very young and picking up doughnuts with my mother at their downtown Muncie location in the early 1970's.
Fast forward to 2024 and they have moved twice and are now on the Northwest side of Muncie in a beautiful large building since around 2010. Parking is in their own surface lot.
The display cases are reminiscent of my teen years when looking over all of the yummy doughnuts. As well as the multi layered service behind the counter to serve customers quickly. I found the service to be very good.
What has changed is the amount of additional items outside of their delicious doughnuts offered. Like pretzels, popcorn and various candies. All available by mail order. They also have these branded items in various locations in state and the Midwest. They also added a coffee bar in their newer location. A barista takes your order.
Finally the biggest change is adding a dining room to enjoy these amazing doughnuts. I found the area clean. It's self busing.
My order was a childhood favorite Long John with buttercream and a powdered sugar with buttercream. I also ordered a house coffee. I enjoyed them in the dining room. The pastries seem close to identical, but smaller in size and much more expensive.
I loved my visit back to my hometown and of course to a super FAVORITE business. However, they are not quite as amazing as they once were in my opinion on taste. At the same time major improvements have occurred which is appreciated. 4.5 rounding down and absolutely recommend...
