I’ve been coming to Kiku since the year of its opening and it has been my absolute favorite and where I celebrate my birthday dinner every year and where I would dine frequently. I have raved about this restaurant forever and I never thought I would ever say or think this but unfortunately I feel this restaurant has fallen. My first complaint is their prices are absolutely insane. It’s not that I cannot afford it, rather that I think it’s outrageous. As an economics and business graduate I understand that inflation is hurting everyone but they have been slowly increasing their prices since before inflation hit and giving lower quality and quantity. I used to always order the shrimp and vegetable tempura as they used to come together, then after awhile they stopped that and had them sold separately which is fine whatever I guess, didn’t care too much. Now I don’t think they sell the vegetable tempura at all. Then when I went there most recently, I ordered the shrimp tempura and I was baffled. They used to serve whole sized shrimp tempura but what they now serve is not even half of what it used to be. It looked like they took one single shrimp tempura and cut it up into 3 skinny, shorter, smaller versions, while increasing the price… I absolutely love lobster as it is one of my fav foods so I ordered the lobster hibachi meal and once I started to try it, I immediately spat it out as the entire thing was bitter. Idk what was wrong with it as they didn’t add anything different or special but it was absolutely horrible and am hoping it was just a bad batch or something. I also went to order a large rice to go… a large chicken fried rice is over $17 which I have yet to see at any other Japanese or sushi restaurant. Another time last year I ordered a veggie fried rice to go, I picked it up, and when I got home I opened to find that it was chicken instead so I called and explained that I did not want chicken and the girl on the phone was extremely rude and basically accused me of lying and told me to take a picture of it to make sure I wasn’t lying or confused by mistaking the chicken for actual rice? I explained to her that it was in fact chicken in there and it was no mistake so I had to take a picture of it, go in, and show it to her along with the actual rice. I was able to get a refund but I shouldn’t have been treated like that simply because I told them there was a mistake with my order. I was not mean or rude at all as I used to work in the food industry for a long time and completely understand how stressful and fast paced it can be. If you’re wondering, this girl was a teenager which is frustrating at times as sometimes they don’t see to know what they’re doing. Also every single time I get pick up to go, it never tastes as good and is almost always cold and you do not receive the same amount of food as you would if you dinned in which is unacceptable for the prices we pay. Overall I am very disappointed but will give it another chance for both dine in and take out and can only hope they do better. I’ve also been hearing very bad things about this restaurant having a bug problem. I do not know if this is true but I have heard it from several sources. I always want to say that even though a representative sees these reviews and apologizes for bad experiences it really means nothing, it’s just all talk as they have not done anything to to improve the restaurant or experiences. If this continues I will no longer dine here, nor will I...
Read moreWe absolutely love coming here and have been coming here since it opened probably 18 years ago. My 20 year old son had his 4th birthday party here. It’s amazing for both kids and adults. The last few times we came here however, things have changed. The food, drinks, and service are still great, but the order in which they cook the food has changed, and it’s not good! They cooked the entrees first (most of them), then the vegetables, then the rice, and at the very last minute they cooked the steak. My husband ordered the steak, and I ordered the calamari and the shrimp. I got my calamari and shrimp at the very beginning, and my husband got hungry and ended up eating half of my food before he ever got anything. Finally we got the vegatables and rice, and eventually his steak, but by that his steak had finally come, he wasn’t even hungry anymore because he had eaten off my plate. It just seemed very strange to cook everybody else’s entree, then the vegatables, then the rice, then the steak. They used to cook the rice first, then the vegatables, and then all the entrees, that made a lot more sense, but the last couple times we came here, we did not enjoy the food as much due to the timing that the food was cooked and delivered, it really didn’t...
Read moreI do not recommend eating here, there are better places to spend your money on sushi. Good atmosphere until you try to order your food. Waiter left after we said we were ready to order. Food was subpar for sushi in the area, and the prices are higher than the competition. Lack of variety compared to the competition as well. Waited 10 minutes for our drinks to be refilled while multiple employees chatted. Waited 15 min to receive the check. After receiving the check you will find out that gratuity is auto included on your bill at 18%, but at the bottom of the receipt it'll tell you the gratuity for 15,18,20,22. I have no problem tipping, nor does the price bother me, but it is something I like to decide on based on service. This is for all parties, including single, you have no choice on this. When questioned about this the waiter only had one thing to say "Its on the bottom of the menu, you can read it. You don't have to tip me anymore." I do not recommend coming here, with the rest of the sushi places in the area. I highly recommend driving 25 min to Plainfield and going to a place called Cho Sushi. Great people, great prices, great menu, and above...
