A recent birthday lunch took me to Shade in the Heights. Shade has been a staple of this quaint area for several years, but this is the first visit where I tried their hamburger. For my birthday, several friends asked where I was having a burger to celebrate, so there was no question as to what would be the lunch choice.
Shade offers their version - Grass Fed Black Hill Ranch Hamburger with lettuce, tomato, red onion and pickles on a homemade bun. Taking off the tomato, as is my custom, spreading on a light dusting of mayo, I sunk my teeth into the first bite. While grass fed beef is usually a little leaner than I prefer, I was plesantly surprised at how juicy this cooked to medium patty tasted. The bubbling cheddar cheese melted evenly across the patty adding an additional burst of juiciness. The hamburger meat was thick and flavorful, if not a little salty. I would advise the chef to dial the salt notch down to ensure that the flavor of the meat remains the focal point of this burger experience. The accompanying fries were nothing more than the battered frozen variety with seasoning sprinkled on top. Even though this burger was nicely presented, I actually expected more from Shade, given their reputation for fresh and innovative offerings. While I am glad I made their burger a part of my birthday celebration, and I cheer Shade for keeping things local with Hill Country Beef, I'll return to their more insprired dishes on...
Read moreThe food is good but they are understaffed and so service is quite slow at no fault of employees. Also the layout is terrible. Anything you need from the server, they have to walk 30 or 40 yards to get it for you. And the bar layout is bad too... there is no exit or entrance near the dining room so employees once again must travel across the universe to get where they need to be. It is also impossible to use a breakfast coupon to take food back up to the room unless you have a declaration from Congress and your server is kind enough to travel across the border to get you the take out containers and forks and spoons etc. And don't order eggs. I was the only guy in there and they took like 15 min to come out. I was done eating by then.
They need to make the breakfast self service instead of hide stuff and require eggs be ordered as needed. They do this to justify keeping the breakfast servers, so they can make money off tips instead of...
Read moreWe have been staying here at the Radisson for 3 weeks for work. We went in to Shade and I ordered the prime rib dip. We were the only cIustomers. The cook came out and whispered in the waiters ear when he got our order and the waiter told him to do what hes gotta do. Don't know what that was all about but the prime rib seemed like it was boiled or something and I found a hair in it when I opened it up to look closer at the meat. both my husband and I lost our appetite. Took 10 minutes to even find our waiter to tell him. I had to take my sandwich to the bartender and show her and she had to hunt him down. The waiter was rude asking me what the hair looked like as if I should have pulled it out and examined it. Have never been so turned off of a restaurant and we eat...
