Summary: Can I give them 6 stars? Get yourself to Little Hats.
Detail: We loved this place so much. As soon as we walked in, we could feel we warmth and kind energy from the place. We could also see it was going to be dangerous in the most delicious way. The staff were so kind and knowledgeable. Everyone we interacted with was laid back and the place seemed to have a good flow. They're BUSY, so the staff being so kind and easy going is no small feat. The deli counter is stacked with delicious meats, cheeses and prepared dishes and desserts for a quick meal. The menu is cards clipped on a line above the deli counter, as I'm assuming it changes depending on what they have available. All transactions happen there at the deli counter whether you're dining in, taking out, or buying things from their well-stocked little grocery.
So many awesome things in the little grocery, including a whole section of GF pasta (they also have signs that GF bread is available as needed). We ended up getting a ton for the house from the grocery because they had some great things we've never seen before. The prices align with specialty stores. You might even get some free day old bread (which you can use for French toast, bread pudding, croutons, or breadcrumbs) if you're nice.
I'm only barley sensitive, so I didn't go GF yesterday, and my stomach says we're all good. I didn't expect barley to be hiding because Italians take their food and making it very seriously.
We ordered our own buffet, of course, and dug in. We had the arancini, Italian wedding soup, cacio e pepe, and sausage and peppers hot sandwich. Everything was amazing, but here are some high points:
The arancini was crisp on the outside but so creamy and gooey on the inside. Managing that is more art than reading a recipe. The Italian wedding soup is the best I've ever had. The meatballs themselves were our wow moment, but the broth was also so flavorful it was absurd. The cacio e pepe was equally as ridiculous. Perfectly al dente pasta with a simple creamy sauce and that pepper bite. I'm so excited about the leftovers I have of that one. The sausage and peppers sandwich made us buy cold sandwiches for our partners at home. Seriously. The bread was perfect and prompted a discussion of how hard it is to find the chewy crunch on the outside with the soft center in a bread with intense integrity that holds up to your fillings. The sausage on the inside of this bread, too, was so flavorful and perfectly moist without being ridiculously greasy. There were also the appropriate amount of items on this sandwich. Enough for every bite of the bread to have something but not so much you couldn't get the dang thing in your mouth.
As you can see, we loved the place. A lot. And we'll definitely be back! Thanks for being awesome,...
Read moreThis is a review for the newly opened Franklin (Cool Springs) location. I have to say that I have been anxiously awaiting the opening of the Cool Springs location for months now and was so excited to get to try it last night, but the experience was a bit of a let down after all those months of waiting. First, I was a little surprised at how expensive it ended up being to feed my family of three here; it was $105 for the three of us for dinner plus 2 desserts. I overall enjoyed my dinner, which was the Italian Wedding Soup and fried ravioli, but I did find the soup a touch too salty and it was served only slightly above room temperature.
Unfortunately, my husband and son were both disappointed by their meals. My son ordered "The Meats" pizza, which the menu did indicate had ricotta cheese. However, when he received his pizza, it had large blobs of very sweet ricotta cheese on it. He had me try it because he was confused about why the ricotta was sweet. When I tried it, the ricotta was in fact extremely sweet. We honestly wondered if the kitchen staff accidentally mixed up regular ricotta cheese with sweetened ricotta cheese that they would use for desserts. It was definitely off-putting to have the very sweet ricotta on a meat pizza. My son scrapped off the ricotta and ate around any residue that it left on the pizza.
My husband ordered the turkey and cheese sandwich. First off, this is a huge sandwich so if you have a big appetite, you will be pleased. However, it was absolutely coated in an insane amount of sauce. My husband had difficulty eating it because it had so much sauce. All of the condiments slid out of the sandwich because of the sauce and within in a couple of minutes the bread was completely turning into mush and disintegrating from the sauce. It was like every surface, even in between the slices of turkey, was covered in an abundant amount of sauce. My husband ate about half and then was over the mess that was this sandwich and gave up eating anymore. We contemplated complaining, but the place was absolutely packed with the line going back to the door and my husband and son did not feel like waiting in line again and then waiting for a new order of food to come out (took a while the first go around) so we did not say anything.
I wouldn't have minded paying $105 for our dinner if we had been blown away by the food, but I left feeling disappointed that we paid that much for dinner only to have 2 out of 3 of us disappointed with our meals. Hopefully, the sweet ricotta and excessive amount of sauce is just growing pains of a new kitchen staff and they will get things worked out as they gain experience. I have not written off Little Hats, but I will probably give them a few months to work out the kinks in the kitchen before I...
Read moreWhile visiting my best friend in Nashville from Dallas - we were exploring all the little districts including Germantown. While doing a little drive around - Little Hats really stood out to us with the buzzing patio full of people and the adorable little brick building. So the next day - while deciding not to walk among the droves of people down Broadway we aimed for a much more local experience and decided immediately on lunch at Little Hats. The local deli charm is noticeable from the start!! Regulars being greeted by the staff, the historic tile on the floor, exposed brick interior… it was like something straight out of a really great indie film. The gentleman behind the counter was extremely helpful and understanding my dilemma about wanting an eggplant sandwich but not wanting to go full on into vegan territory. He helped customize a vegan eggplant caponata with house mozzarella. The little market they had in the back of the restaurant definitely gave my friend a few fun ideas for quick dinners for the future but man oh man… when our sandwiches were ready… absolutely outstanding!!! I would thank all the people on the patio the day before that helped bring out attention to this little goldmine if I could because that lunch is on my life’s top 5 sandwich’s ever. The chunks of eggplant were fantastic, the cheese just oozing out of every bite, the bread so fresh and a delightful crunchy exterior, so much flavor in every single bite. I wish we would’ve had the opportunity to come back to try more items on the menu but this just gives me a whole different reason to hop on a plane & visit my bestie...
