Tacos El G is a former Tacos El Gordo location in National City run by former Tacos El Gordo employees that is, for all intents and purposes, nearly identical to Tacos El Gordo. I say "nearly identical" because Tacos El Gordo's reason for closing this shop initially was that it couldn't find enough pro taqueros to staff it. I'll let you chew on what that implies for a moment.
During my recent trip, I was ordering my tacos and some unseen guy in the back kitchen starts screaming, clearly in intense pain. Everyone upfront pretends to ignore it, but it goes on for another excruciating minute and a half, and then the screams turn to sobs, and just as my taquero is about to carve me some al pastor off the trompo, he excuses himself and goes back to assess the situation. When he returns to complete my order, the man in the back is still yowling. I ask what's up and all I get is a shrug. Just another day on Highland Avenue.
Anyway, the "Tacos de Adobada" are awesome here and could pass muster at Tacos El Gordo. Most people wouldn't be able to tell apart a taco made here and Tacos El Gordo, but that's because most people aren't paying much attention to the tortilla. I also find the adobada tacos to be greasier here, and some very minor details are not as well-attended to: the cilantro is not as finely-chopped, and the condiments bar is messier, for example. The sauces are identical and the al pastor (shepherd-style) pork is still excellent.
This place is run-down and dumpy-looking, but so was Tacos El Gordo's Chula Vista location until its recent relocation and upgrade. On this taco-dense stretch of Highland Avenue that includes popular taco destinations Salud, Gorditas Don Andres, Mi Tierra, and Roberto's Numero Uno, Tacos El G's "Taco de Adobada" is the taco you want to make sure you stop for if you only have...
Read moreThe food was Amazing, BUT the reason why I gave a 1 is because I was over-looked ignored and served after the person behind me. Its sad when some are still in a place of hatred of another race. There was no reason I could think of other than me being black that I was served after the mexican man behind me. This same behavior shows in many things I support of Mexican culture. In the grocery store, In the clothing or shoe stores or even being cut off while walking as if Im not there. I really dont speak on it but last night was just obvious. My question is how can a race expect you to care for there well being of rights and laws and immigration when they care for no one unless its there own. My heart has no hatred and I love and support all races but this needs to stop even you you hate blacks for reasons same as a racist Kkk. Then you should not have problems with the racism that occurs within politics towards you. Its almost as if the are united to hate and look at blacks as we are benneath them and we are nobodys. Now dont get me wrong not all are like this. My lil big brother and sister are Mexican decend and the upbringing their mom taught was love for all and I grew up with them I dont know why hatred is being taught but you can expect a change for hate towards you if you give off hatred towards others because of the color of their skin. But I guess it wont matter but It needed to be said. May God bless you and even though the guy showed hate I still love him through...
Read moreI can safely say that these tacos are probably good for someone that likes them exactly as they are served. I unfortunately am one of the weird ones that despises guac. And usually all's that it takes is just asking for no guac, salsa etc. But I went to the drive thru window where there is no menu (speaker at actual menu is broken and menu is not lit), and asked if the asada tacos had only cilantro and onion. I was told yes cilantro and onion. Apparently that wasn't the right question to ask, as when I got my tacos and asked for salsa on the side, I was told well there's already some on the taco. She then told me there was also onion, cilantro, and guacamole. I was not informed of this earlier and was also not allowed to switch out the tacos at that point. I tried them and the tacos were inedible due to the guac that I couldn't remove. My wife tried them and didn't like the spice, another thing I was going to ask for on the side. And because of the spice I did not allow my son to try them at all. So our dinner essentially went uneaten. The steak by itself was delicious though. We have had our fair share of tacos and love them, but are usually accustomed to the classic taco truck style with only meat, onion and cilantro. And if they are different we are used to modifying them to that style. Once again I am sure that if you like guac and a little heat these tacos are probably amazing, but the customer service was lacking to the point we couldn't enjoy...
