MUST READ!! MANAGEMENT CHANGED!! And, with it, the quality of the food and presentation... Will not be coming back here again, sadly.
My family and I dined at Sushi Ya two months ago and had THE BEST experience of any sushi restaurant we've ever been to — literally! We're very experienced when it comes to knowing the quality of sushi and its presentation — from how the sushi should be rolled to how the particular meals should taste. Sadly, that experience changed immensely when we came in the other day and found out that the management changed a month ago. The restaurant is in new hands now and we immediately noticed the negative changes that have taken effect...
First, the tea. When we came a month ago, the tea was the best that we had EVER had in ANY sushi restaurant! It was a green tea made from actual tea leaves. It was so good, one of my guests asked the server for the distributor's name so she could order the tea herself to drink at home! This time, however, the tea tasted like water. Very thin. Hardly any taste. Very poor quality. And you could see a "powder" at the bottom of the glass, which indicated to us that tea bags were used — a much cheaper alternative to tea leaves. Picture below.
Second, the sushi was rolled terribly. We ordered the same rolls as last time and were very disappointed with the presentation now... The rice was already falling off the roll when it was placed on our table and you could clearly see the seaweed underneath it, which should be completely covered in white rice. WOW. Very sloppy job. See second picture below. This indicated to us that the chefs in the back didn't know how to properly roll them. Rolling is a tradition that takes up to 3 years to master — no joke! The new management booted out the old chefs (who knew what they were doing) and hired new chefs that don't have adequate experience — again, as a cost-saving measure.
Third, even the quality of the straws in our drink glasses and the quality of the take-out boxes was evident. Flimsy and cheap. Again, big difference from what we used last time. One of my guests is not adept with chopsticks, so she requested a fork and was given a PLASTIC fork! They don't even have stainless steel utensils like they did last time. WOW. Folks, these little details matter. The new management's cost-saving measures equals cheaper quality which, in turn, leads to a worse experience.
Fourth, the restaurant hired completely new servers. Not sure where the old servers went, but I'm sure the new management fired them — again, for cost-saving measures.
Fifth, all of the above goes without saying that the meals tasted completely different from last time. From the salmon skin salad to the teriyaki chicken. Not the same ingredients and definitely not the same preparation as before...
Ultimately, our experience was upsetting, especially compared to how stellar the quality of the food and presentation was two months ago to now when the management changed. Night and day difference. The new management's cost-saving measures say everything... Sadly, we will not be coming back here again and advise our friends (and you, the reader) to not eat here in the future because...
Read moreThis place is amazing. My group of 6 had a wonderful time and ended our Vegas trip off perfectly here. Originally wanted to go somewhere else but they ended up refusing to take walk-ins, pretty lame but I'm glad with the way things turned out. Price is great at $30 a person (at least compared to Washington where AYCE sushi is scarce and pricier).
We called to check availability and they fit us in as soon as possible. Gave us an overestimated wait time of 30 minutes but we arrived in 10 minutes and got seated promptly (maybe total 15 minute wait rather than 30). Staff were so welcoming and friendly the entire time. I wish I could shoutout a single employee, but every single one of them was a rockstar and I can't name all of them. You know who you are. Deserved tip on top of gratuity. Service is beyond excellent.
Anyways, not enough pictures to show the damage we caused because there was no time. Food kept coming without delays so long as we ordered. They aren't scamming you here. You aren't waiting long for rolls which means you will eat till you're full. Other spots similar to this take their time and then ask you to leave past a certain point, limiting your food intake and experience.
They have all sorts of items with such unique fillings. One that stood out was the Grand Canyon Roll with rice cake - not something that sounds tasty in sushi but it's simply creative.
Select items are labelled with a 1 to show you can only order one per person. Most of these I'd recommend, they're limited for a reason. Come and try things you've never had before. The nigiri offerings can also be pretty unique so step out of your comfort zone to try something new. You never know when you'll have the opportunity again.
Avoiding going into details on every single roll because that would take years. Our primary waitress, Christine, provided us with a specialty Mistletoe which was fantastic. It's the tuna carpaccio with avocado and miso sauce on top. It's not shown on the menu because it's seasonal (Mistletoe for the holidays) so I'm sure they have all sorts of seasonal specialties - highly recommend asking!
Also included in the AYCE is one free dessert at the end. Nothing special, but there's always room for dessert and the offer is a pleasant way to end this fabulous feast.
Just come! Start ordering rolls, they will come no...
Read moreWe've been here several times before and it's been pretty good. However, this time was different. We were weirded out at first because the quality of the fish was not as good. As a matter of fact, it was subpar. Some of the fish on our nigiri weren't even in one piece. They were plating nigiri with sauces and those without on the same plate so you would get sauce all of the rice of the other pieces and it would mess up the flavors. For example, the tamago nigiri does not taste good when the rice is soaked in garlic ponzu sauce. They were also using warmer than normal plates. We love sushi so we go to several places and we've never been served sushi on warm plates. To clarify, they were not room temperature. They were really warm, dancing on the edge of hot. We didn't expect chilled plates. Room temp is fine. Hot is not. We mentioned to our servers a couple of times that the plates were almost hot. We didn't want to complain too much because we didn't want to seem like Karens but when we got our tuna roll to the table, we decided to ask for the manager. We didn't want our dinner to be waived, we still intended to pay for it. We just wanted to make sure that he was aware of what was happening and that they wouldn't charge us a la carte prices for the 3 orders of fish that we didn't eat because they were really warm. The manager said that it's normal to serve sushi on warm plates. This was new to us. He even brought plates to the table for us to touch to, I guess, prove us wrong. He was pretty defensive about everything so we just let it go and even apologized for the bother. I wasn't planning on writing this review but I've slept on it and it continued to bother me. We pay $26 each for our dinner, we expect fish on nigiri to be in one piece, not hot, and not hacked up like this. I'm really disappointed because like I said, we've been here before and we really liked it. A couple of our favorite AYCE sushi places are Sushi Mon and Konbea. When we feel like splurging, we'll go to Osaka or Kabuki. They've NEVER served us this. With all this being said, it may still be good for you to try because this might be just a fluke. Hopefully, we will find ourselves inclined to give them another try but not...
