This will be a little long because I want to be fair to this new restaurant. Since this is one of four American style breakfast places in New Braunfels, we have been eagerly awaiting their opening. Reviews from their restaurant in Port Aransas were excellent, but let's be honest, the bar isn't high there. The other three other breakfast places in NB are Buttermilk Café Fork and Spoon and Union Station. After eating at Avery's for the first time today, I would rate them third.
The service was excellent, but they were not busy. The wait person was very nice and friendly. However, even though they were not busy, we were seated at a booth next to a group that was obviously having a business meeting and a little noisy. A booth on the other side of the otherwise empty restaurant would have been nice.
My wife ordered the breakfast sandwich and was very pleased with it. She told me it was the best she has had in NB. However, the bread had to much butter or oil to where it was like untoasted bread. So far so good.
I ordered the three egg breakfast, over medium, with sausage, hash browns and sour dough toast. Not so good here. The eggs were overcooked (more like over hard). The sausage was very good taste wise but cold. The hash browns were "mushy". The toast was barely toasted and also cold when served. Overall I would give my plate a 2 out of 5.
Prices were also a high compared to the Buttermilk and Union Station. I wouldn't even mention the price if the food compared or was better than the other options in town.
I short, we were disappointed but we will return to give them another chance. We understand they are just getting started here. So come on Avery's, get it together. We know you can do better. At this point, I would not recommend them unless they improve...
Read moreThe food was amazing and the owners' story was really interesting. We met Avery (I assume Jr.) and he told us all about how their restaurant came to be where it's at. It's a true family restaurant and his father, Avery, still works there too. We started with onion rings because my wife doesn't like seafood. They were crunchy goodness but I wish they were a little thicker cut. I ordered the all you can eat shrimp with a baked potato and gumbo. All of the food is made to order and made from scratch. The shrimp were excellent from the first one to the last one I ate, and I ate a bunch. The gumbo was excellent and filled with fish. The Coleslaw was sweet and delicious. I gave my wife my baked potato and tasted her fries instead and they were good.
She ordered a bacon 🥓 cheese burger 🍔 which had a handmade patty. She said it was really good, but not the best burger she's ever had. But she really likes bacon cheese burgers and gets them almost everywhere we go. The food was so good we decided to order some desserts to go. The pecan pie 🥧 looked amazing so I couldn't resist taking a piece.
The menu is a good combination of seafood favorites from the Texas Coast and southern comfort foods. We will definitely be back and will have to go back for...
Read moreThe food is tasty... but there's an issue with it recently. I've been getting food from here around once a month for the past year and a half. In the past 6 months (roughly) every single time I get food from here for me and for my boyfriend - mind you, he has a strong stomach too - we have gotten debilitating food poisoning. We've given them the benefit of the doubt too many times. I don't know if it's how they cook their eggs, their bacon, or just everything in general, because both of us end up having a bad time regardless of what we order. I almost always get the french toast with two overeasy eggs and bacon, he almost always gets an omelette with hashbrowns and a biscuit. Whatever we order, we end up always getting two different meals, and both of us end up with food poisoning. Every time. The food still is tasty, the orange juice is alright, a bit sour most times, but for our health... we can't trust the kitchen like we used to be able to. Avoid the place if you value your gut health. On the flip side of that though, if you need a system clean out I highly recommend an omelette with cheddar cheese. It'll start getting you going almost...
