From the outside, this restaurant presents itself as a polished, promising picture: sleek interior design, a dry-age cooler on display, and a menu that hints at upscale modern American dining. But once the meal begins, it becomes clear - this is a restaurant suffering from an identity crisis, unsure whether it wants to be a casual bar, a high-end eatery, or something in between.
While it flirts with steakhouse territory, the 14 oz "prime" ribeye was cooked to temperature but lacked depth, flavor, and char. It leaned heavily on aesthetics (grill marks, plating) rather than substance. The potato puree served alongside was watery and under seasoned, offering no support to the already bland main.
The most puzzling was a small dry-age cooler in the dining area, suggesting focus on quality and craft. When asked if the dry-aged ribeye was available, we were told it was unavailable due to "limited availability" as stated in the menu, and were offered another steak at a higher price that had "similar marbling". It felt like a bait-and-switch - an attempt to present the image of a premium experience without the follow-through. If dry-aged steak is part of your identity, it should be on the menu, not just in the decor.
The atmosphere adds another layer of confusion. Upon entering, you're immediately hit with a loud, bar-like environment that continues as you navigate through a maze-like layout to reach the dining room - where the noise level remains just as overwhelming. A long happy hour - spanning much of the evening - invites crowds and volume that drown out conversation, making it difficult to enjoy the meal or occasion. It's hard to appreciate a $90 steak when the vibe feels more like a cocktail lounge.
Even the drinks, while decently mixed, seem designed less to compliment the food and more to distract you from the cost. With pricing that rivals established restaurants in San Antonio, the disconnect between what's promised and what's delivered is stark. The strong cocktails may help you forget what you're spending - but they can't redeem the overall experience.
This restaurant wants to be everything at once. A steakhouse, a modern bistro, and a social bar. In trying to do it all, it ends up doing nothing particularly well. If you're looking for substance, consistency, and a clear culinary identity, skip the facade. Head to Myron's down the street or make the drive to San Antonio.
TLDR: A confused concept wrapped in...
Read moreHad reservations for 4 because our best friends were celebrating 29 years of marriage. None of us had ever been here yet, so we were excited to try it out after hearing so many great things!
The wives had the Beef Wellington and us guys both had the Ribeyes. Tbh, that wasn’t our first choice of steak, but they were out of the 12oz Dry Aged Prime Beeman Ranch Wagyu Ribeye. We were soooo looking forward to that!! So we just went with the 14oz Prime Angus Ribeye. We had drinks before and during dinner as well.
Drinks - Mexican Martini 10/10 - excellent! Very flavorful.
R.R. Boulevardier 6/10 - had a cinnamon flavor to it that needed to be watered down slightly. Honestly, I’m not a big whiskey drinker, so my opinion might be skewed.
Salads 8/10 - all of our Caesar Salads were very good. Had a slight lemon taste which made the flavors pop. Definitely enjoyed it.
Beef Wellington 8/10 - the pastry was light and flavorful. The steak was seasoned well and very tender. Honestly, probably one of the best BW we have had……ever. Very good!
Prime Angus Ribeye 8/10 - we may have been slightly off because we were so wanting the Wagyu and “settled” for the Angus. In all fairness, the steaks were very good. They were tender and very flavorful. Not the best steak I’ve ever had, but pretty damn good.
Atmosphere 8/10 - has a high end feel. It’s very cozy yet elegant as well.
Service 7/10 - service overall was ok. There was lots of prom kids there that night, so was very busy. Waiter kept forgetting stuff, and seemed off a little. He did give everyone a chocolate mousse cake for an Anniversary gift.
Value 7/10 - it was good. The steaks were a little high on price, but it’s a high end restaurant, so the prices will expectedly be higher due to service and ambiance coupled with better food options.
Overall 8/10 - definitely give these guys a try! I don’t think you’ll be...
Read moreWorking on trying out and supporting new restaurants in New Braunfels - we need a good range of local restaurants to challenge the bigger the cities around these parts. We were happy we finally tried out Cody's after being open several months. They have a wide range of options and we skipped the higher priced steaks etc. so that we could try more individual items. We always judge a place on their brussels first, and will say Cody's does a great job, better than most. For the price the serving size was quite large, brussels expertly cooked and the addition of grapes was a nice surprise that matched well. Definitely a repeat dish. The arancini was excellent as well. We also had the burger with bacon jam added and we found they did an excellent job - our bun was toasted perfectly inside, and not soggy whatsoever. Priced well for a wagyu burger in this area. We finished with the carrot cake cheese cake combo which was also very tasty. We stuck with tequila and mezcal drinks - drinks are pricey just about everywhere these days - so will look further into their happy hour options, but highly recommend Tequila's Fiery Revenge (not as spicy as name connotates, so don't be afraid of that). Close 2nd was Smokey the Pear. Giving 5 stars across the board and will be back to support these fine newcomers. Last thing, recommend getting reservations (I had seen that option on their website and on Google maps, but forgot to do it earlier in the day). We were pleasantly surprised at how busy they were on a Tuesday evening, although this is the holiday season where restaurant...
