If you are in New Orleans and you do not go to Joe K's, y'all r missin one of the most important culinary experiences of your life. Period. I was in New Orleans for a couple of days and I am glad I could make it to this wonderful place. I had watched some great reviews of this place on YouTube and read some online and all of them were right. They open at 11am and the tables get occupied pretty soon. The place is well lit with big windows and the ambience is just right. They have a bar at one corner and the kitchen is visible from the tables. They have a bigger space indoors for larger groups of diners. We ordered the daily special, the split pea soup, the regular house gumbo and an eggplant napolean.
It was raining when we were there and the split pea soup and the gumbo hit the perfect notes on that rainy day. The split pea soup was rich and creamy and we savored every bit of it. We had tried gumbo at every restaurant we went in New Orleans by then and theirs was right there on the top. It was just perfectly done, thick and savory with perfect level of salt and seasoning for us. The eggplant napolean with rum sauce elevated the whole dining experience for me. It was rich and creamy and the run sauce was just perfect, sweet and creamy and hint of that rum. Damn!! It was just great. We concluded our meal with the bread pudding as our dessert and what should I tell you abt it!!! It was so freaking good. The pudding had crusty texture on the outside and warm and moist inside. The taste of cooked butter on the pudding was fantastic. Wish I could have more of it. The whole experience was a pure joy and I can't recommend this place enough for trying out authentic New Orleans cajun food. Our server Stephaney was great and I found all the servers attentive and they would clear the tables and clean it as soon as the customers left. Everyone seemed to work in great harmony.
A must visit place!!! À...
Read moreOne of our favorite restaurants in the area was jam packed wall to wall on this trip to magazine street which caused us to try out a new location. Lucky for us, not even a block up was Joey K's. We weren't planning on "creole" fare for this night but sometimes you have to roll with the punches and that's what we did. It worked out just fine.
We decided to order mostly appetizers and share them around the table. We got an order of the Fried Green Tomatoes with Grilled Shrimp and Remoulade, Crab and Corn Beignets, The Eggplant Napoleon with Fried Shrimp and Crawfish Cream, and finished off with the Bread Pudding.
The Fried Green Tomatoes were quite good. Often times when I order something like this I feel like the tomatoes are too tart. I know they should have that element to them, but a lot of times they're even more tart than you'd expect. These had a nice flavor to them. The grilled shrimp was a good touch and the remoulade was a nice sauce to add to the bite. I'd order this again.
The Crab and Corn Beignets were good, but maybe a little too odd for me haha. They were sweet as you'd imagine but also savory. I enjoyed them for what they were but out of everything if there was a dish voted off the island, this is the one for me personally.
The Eggplant Napoleon dish was excellent. The eggplant and shrimp both had great flavor and the crawfish cream sauce was one of the best I've had in Nola...and I've had many. I would order this again without reservation, and I'd be happy to do it.
The bread pudding was also very high quality. I have had others in the area that I personally prefer, but that's not to take away from this tasty dessert. If we went back tomorrow, I'd eat it again.
Mix in some solid service, sangria, and a huge goblet of beer and Joey K's on Magazine is an easy verdict -...
Read moreThis place is a gem on Magazine. I was down in the area taking the wife to lunch at a little spot around the corner. There was a wait so I got the waiting vibrator coaster thing and decided to walk a little. Didn’t expect to eat anything else but we came across Joey K’s. He looked at the menu and there was no wait, plus the special was corned beef with cabbage. This is something I have not eaten since I was a child, and then trying to get my wife to cook it, but she’s never had it, so she scared of it. So we decided to give it a shot. I returned the my vibrator to the other restaurant and sat down and Joey K’s to have a meal. Let me tell you I was pleasantly surprised at the portions, the service, and the flavor of the food. Everything we ordered was cooked to perfection and it brought us back to childhood. Remind me of the things that I loved so much when I was a child.
Every time we went, we started with an appetizer the first time we got the Eggplant Napoleon and it is highly recommended. Our second trip we got the Fried Green Tomato’s. I will say that they do have a kick, ok for me I like spice but wife could eat much of it. But if you are good with spices and hot foods, I no doubt recommend the Fried Green Tomatoes also. For the main dish I had the corn beef, that came with cabbage and potatoes like I said a little while ago plus I ordered a side of green beans because hey why not. My wife ordered the chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and also green beans. The chicken fried steak was phenomenal and so phenomenal that she has gotten it every time we went back since our first visit, which is three times. She didn’t care much for the green beans so I just ate them.
We’ve had three visits and not one time have they let me down. I’ll give this one five star across-the-board excellent...
