We were famished after walking to Southeast Light. We stopped on our way back to the center of town and asked a COS for his recommendation. Although a bit out of the way, we walked past many restaurants in the downtown area and found Poor People's Pub as directed. Our initial reaction was a bit of disappointment. Having been out in the sun, walking, for close to 5 hours, we just wanted to sit inside and relax. The hostess indicated we could a) sit at the bar (no thank you) or b) sit outside (no cooling off in a/c). There was a 'bigger' table inside but she said she needed to keep that open for larger parties. We agreed to sit outside and then were seated at a 'wine-barrel' type hi-top table where we had to sit bow-legged for the entire meal...a bit uncomfortable. Meanwhile, there were 2 nice looking empty picnic tables that sat empty for most of our meal; about 10 minutes before we left, they sat a party of 2 people at one of them. If I had known, I'd have asked to be moved, but assumed we'd be told the large tables are for larger parties. Onto the meal...because so far I wasn't feeling like we should stay. My husband ordered the steak frites sandwich; I ordered the Italian. Our meals came with chips but we decided to upgrade to fries which were an additional $2. When our meals came, they were definitely ample servings for the price. There was no way either of us could pick up our sandwiches and eat them...we needed forks & knives! Eating outside, there's a caddy on the table with plastic cutlery, plenty of napkins, and condiments. My plate had arrived with a good sharp knife from inside, but the plastic cutlery on the table was the low-end stuff that bends if the slightest amount of tension is put on it. After managing for about a third of the meal, we finally flagged down the waitress and asked for flatware from inside. She was very accommodating. My husband enjoyed his meal, but seriously, my sandwich was the star of this show! It had everything(!) on it...peppers, olives, pepperoncinis, lettuce, artichoke hearts, onions, etc. etc., along with melted cheese, toasted bread, and all the Italian meats! First time to Block Island and if/when I ever go back, I'm going to want this "sandwich" again. It...
Read moreMy family and I have visited this spot a handful of times over the years and have come out as fans of the food and atmosphere. Our experience tonight, however, gave us a glimpse into the decline of the restaraunt and will prevent us from returning. When given our food, one of our orders (chicken Caesar salad) was forgotten. The server showed no regret. When it came out, the chicken was so dry to the point where it could not be eaten. I ordered the steak frites sandwich for $21, and was let down when I was delivered half a sandwich. The steak also lacked the tenderness and punch of flavor I was hoping for. One person in our party ordered a double burger, and the patties were the size of my palm, with the appearance of a breakfast sausage. We were told they were smash burgers, but they clearly looked like frozen patties in all honesty. Another person in our party ordered the buffalo Mac and cheese, and it came out half the size it has been in the past. Our server was unfortunately very impersonal and a little snappy when we brought the poor quality of food to her attention. I’ve ultimately come to the conclusion that this is a tourist spot - high prices for low quality food. Plenty of other great spots...
Read moreIn the quaint little town of New Shoreham on Block Island, the place known as Poor People's Pub resides a short walk from the ferry docks, and stands as a true dive bar set in the jewel of Rhode Island. While most eateries on the island are certainly unique examples of New England vacation spots, the PPP, as it is known, holds its place as a fun and jovial spot. It is known best for its lively atmosphere, boasting live music, outstanding pub food, and a fine selection of beers, wines, and spirits. Visiting with friends there, I enjoyed a delicious snack of Nashville hot boneless wings, which didn't hold back the heat with its spicy flavor, and then followed that up with their buffalo mac n cheese, which was served on a skillet with a rich cheese sauce. Though more suited for a younger crowd, this place will impress islanders and tourists of all ages.
Additionally, the PPP has a spacious outdoor seating area. There is no parking onsight, but there's plenty of options nearby within a short...
