Pros: The strudel (especially normal apple strudel--not sugar-free), rugelach, and linzer tarts are delicious when fresh. Everything is a big hit or miss depending on how fresh they are.
Bear in mind I've lived nearby and pass the bakery at least 2x a day but I go in maybe 3-4 times a year because the store is not friendly, the food is a hit or miss, and it's kind of scammy and not trustworthy.
It's a family-owned bakery with some of the best apple strudel in NYC but the family has outsourced to staff for years now without doing regular visits to ensure quality control of everything. Visiting here is just extremely unpleasant and untrustworthy. If you don't bring exact change in cash, you'll probably be "overcharged" or given back less change than you're owed.
Giant Red Flag: The woman who works at the counter on most mornings tends to sneak in overcharges and doesn't seem to want customers there. -For example, today I gave her $40 for a full strip of apple strudel which costs $28. She gave me a pile of quarters about $3-$5 total-- not $12 in change. I was in a rush to take the strudel to the subway. -. I was the only customer in the shop at that moment, so she wasn't confused and accidentally gave the wrong change. -I then checked negative reviews of this shop online and there are similar stories of her...
Read moreIt’s a mini bakery with all of my favorites. Love the window you already see the cheese danish and their “siblings” Multiple times I got Hungarian sweets or biscuits from here…The cheese amazing my latest time was a bit hard and dry (maybe because was a cold day) but I warm up in the oven (you can do microwave also) and feels like just freshly baked. Dobos and chocolate mousse exactly made just like in my country, and the cherry pie (square Hungarian) for the pie lovers the absolutely best! Never skip the strudels!! The lady behind a counter very-very helpful and she let my mom choose the pastry whenever she would like to pick. Explained how we can order by phone, prices and payments etc. I have a very busy month so I will order couple of things here for...
Read moreUpon entering Andre's, you'll be struck by two things; the nice looking baked items in the window and the sour mood of otherwise very attractive waitresses. Toto, you are not in Kansas anymore. In this cramped space, it's as if you're in a work camp circa 1940. When you get served, don't expect a smile. The strudel is bland, with pieces of apple that aren't sufficiently cooked. The coffee is among the blandest you'll ever have. I will say this though, the apple cake (otherwise known as apple square), is much more flavorful and at a lower price of the strudel! The paprikash soup looks delicious, but don't expect a smile. The borsht looks delicious, but don't expect service with a smile. The schnitzel also looks great. But don't expect even a...
