A five star rating is way too little for this establishment! I really don’t write reviews unless the restaurant is extremely bad or extremely good. Balboa restaurant was neither extremely bad or extremely good. This restaurant far exceeded my discriminating expectations. This restaurant was phenomenally excellent. We needed a venue for a family gathering. Most places we saw either had a nice venue and mediocre food, or good food and a inferior uncomfortable venue. This establishment had both a beautiful, comfortable dining room and food that was a treat to your taste buds. The dining room had a soothing ambiance and was so beautifully decorated with chafing dishes and white tablecloths and flowers. The staff was so gracious and accommodating, and went out of their way to make sure everyone was taken care of. The american dishes were excellent and the Caribbean dishes were delectable. The salmon was cooked fresh and moist and well seasoned. The oxtails left everyone wanting to go back for second helpings. Even the vegetables were freshly cut and seasoned well. I did not know about this restaurant three weeks ago although I grew up in Crown heights, Balboa is a hidden gem in Brooklyn near Medgar Evers college. Balboa is one of the best restaurants I have have ever had the pleasure of experiencing. Excellent...
Read moreI think this place has some of the best food in the neighborhood, and competition is stiff. The wings are really out of this world...and the goat curry unlike anywhere I’ve ever had it. The macaroni pie is also realllyyyyy good. The stew chicken was also a great hit among my friends. I’ve tried a lot of things on the menu and I’ve never been disappointed
For years this was my go to spot for evening soirées and the quality of the food was never disappointing. But on a number of occasions I would make an order and then later be told they were sold of an item. This happened often, and sure I received an apology and an alternative option but it never really made me satisfied. The last time I went I was visiting the area and even though I ordered the food 30 mins before, I waited for an additional 30 mins to receive it. I understand the establishment is busy, and there’s a pandemic, and we all need to be more accommodating but I value my time and I did not get that feeling from them.
I’m taking the one star away because at everyone junction that they fell short of standards they made no attempt...

I ordered curry chicken, and they gave me grilled. I politely explained that’s not what I ordered. I didn’t even know they had grilled chicken.
The young woman gave me an attitude, and stood there as if she expected me to take it anyway.
Of course, I wasn’t going to take what I didn’t pay for. She sucked her teeth, tapped her fingers on the table, popped her gum, then looked at her friend who took my order to ask her what I said. Her friend didn’t even look at me—she just said, “Grilled chicken.”
The other employee took it to the back, and told whom assume to be the manager.
The manager came out and asked me what J ordered. Then she looked at the employee who took my order, and asked what I said. Of course, she said grilled chicken.
Listen. Mistakes happen. I’m not mad about the mistake. Or the additional wait. I’m actually not mad at all.
But I don’t appreciate disrespect when I know what came out of my mouth, and I lead with good will. Just apologize and fix the order. No big deal.
The waitresses are young. I hope they get...
