Spending an evening at Bono Trattoria never feels like just going out to eat. It feels like going to a special place for a special evening. My wife and I were talking about that tonight and trying to put a finger on why.... The food is exceptional, the portions are perfect, the price is right. But what makes Bono stand out? We settled on at least one answer: the atmosphere. Not just the ambience, but the atmosphere - the sense of relaxed happiness between management and servers, and between servers and guests. The feeling that you're welcome, not just as a consumer or paying customer, but as a fellow human being, and thus part of an extended family. Speaking of ambience: there's a big pizza oven right in the dining area, keeping the place warm and fragrant. And there are other little touches too - maybe not so little, because if you think about it, they're actually rare: the complimentary mulled wine that was brought to our table by our cheerful, attentive-but-not-pushy server, Gabe, as we were seated, and the fact that a co-owner, Graziella, stopped by to say hello and chat after our meal. She didn't have to - she could have stayed in the back working on menu changes for the new year. But she's clearly all about making her visitors feel at home. Anyway, the place is hard to beat. But don't take my word for it. Try Bono Trattoria and rate it for yourself the next time you're uptown. You...

I went to check this place out with my with my brother and right from the beginning the owner gave me the "these kids don't have enough to pay" treatment. We ordered inside because we saw there was no waiters and we got a margarita pizza. When we got our pizza we decided to eat it outside. We sat and as soon as I go for a bite the guy who took our order went in the middle of the restaurant and rudely announced that my brother and I can't eat here and that we have to leave. I felt a shamed and embarrassed because there was no reason why I should've been told to leave, especially the way he did. I went up to him and told him "you don't have to treat paying customers like that and be rude about it" he responded with "I told you respectfully to leave, you are the one who is rude." I don't own a business but I do know about moral and how to treat people.
In my time living in Washington Heights I've never been kicked out of a restaurant for absolutely no reason. If he is going to have a restaurant in Washington Heights/Harlem and talk to the people of that community who works hard to make ends meet in order to eat at a restaurant like Bono just so they can be kicked out, I suggest you don't open up a restaurant in a community like this. Clearly shows it's not a business...
Read moreI’ve been coming here since 2016 but after tonight I won’t be returning. I’ve celebrated family events in this place, I’ve brought many of my friends and family. But the level of disrespect I experienced today was unbelievably shocking. It was me + a friend and the food was good, as always. Towards the end my friend decides to pay for us. After paying for our bill he took out cash to tip the waitress. She asked if anything was wrong with the service, to which I replied “no, there wasn’t anything wrong”. I was really confused by her question. Well she was not satisfied with the amount of money she was receiving as a tip. She started schooling us, saying that they usually receive 20%. Saying we should know this because we’ve been there before. She was saying all this then touched the money and walked away leaving it on the table right in front of us. I’ve never felt so ashamed. I was shocked, I couldn’t believe what was happening. How distasteful, unethical and just plain rude. My friend was so embarrassed. After we left he told me that he thought what he had given her was enough, which it was. I still can’t believe she did all of that just because she was receiving a little less...
