I've been here several times since it open in my neighborhood. It was a Godsend upon arrival, due to the fact the we had little in the way of a bar or a different restaurant in the neighborhood (most of the restaurants are Dominican). It was packed to the seams every night! Business was booming for them of course, but the crowds quickly became overwhelming. For me the euphoria quickly wore off! I often stopped by finding it way too crowded to get a beer. Deterred, I marched up to 168th to Coogan's. That happened quite often actually during the fall and winter months. This place has been opened little over a year and because it's currently its the only game in town the popularity hasn't waned specifically Friday and Saturday nights!
It took a unplanned visit from my favorite cousin to change my game plan of sorts. Not wanting to travel very far I suggested we go there on a Saturday afternoon, hoping to find a table and a smaller crowd. I found both! Revelation people! We were able to order food and drinks and sit and while away an afternoon without the noise and chaos of a Saturday night.
The menu is strictly pub food- burgers and sandwiches. I haven't tried everything obviously, but what I have tried is pretty good stuff. I had the chicken sandwich sans bun (trying to follow Michael Pollan's advice of no bread period!), my cousin had the veggie burger and a grilled chicken salad. She raved about it! I had the veggie burger on a previous visit, it was ok. The one they made before this version was really good! The current one's a bit spicier but good. I did have the fries, but I have to really begin to cut back. We followed that with drinks from the menu. I had the watermelon infused margarita (a bit weak in terms of alcohol), she had the Acai Caipirinha- she had 2! Since the margarita wasn't up to snuff, I went with a George Dickel and seltzer. Any place with Dickel has won a place in my drinking heart! Of course there is a good selection of rotating beer on the menu and the crowd is always mixed which shows the odd diversity and how the neighborhood has changed in the past 5 years. It's definitely not my Granny's neighborhood any more.
I gave Harlem Public 3 stars but it could easily be 3.5 or 4. So 4 for the drinks, the food, the service and crowd, minus one for the overcrowded weekend nights, honestly it can be deterrent. If you should find yourself in Sugarhill on a saturday or sunday afternoon, you will not find a better place to chill have beer and some food than Harlem Public....
Ā Ā Ā Read moreWe went to Harlem Public when they had some special menu for just one week. We went on the second day to order the āsecretā menu items. For a Tuesday evening, they had a good crowd going. Inside was a bit dark, and not as big as it looks from the outside. The tables were limited, they only had a few tables left.
We put in our orders, all from the special menu. Sebastianās Tacos, The Green Belly Burger, and Cocojito Verde.
Cocojito Verde was sweet from coconut, kind of milky, which was unexpected. It was really strong, serious cocktail! Then, the server came and told us that they donāt have Sebastianās Tacos. It was the second day of the āsecret menu weekā and they claimed they already have sold out of it⦠really? I wonder if they were just not prepared for it? So sadā¦
Now, the Green Belly Burger. We told them that we will be sharing it, so the burger came pre-cut in half. The burger usually comes with a handcut French Fries, but we got Tater Tots instead. It had a thick patty, cooked just the way we ordered, and super juicy! It had thick avocado fries, which was interesting and tasty!
The server was nice and friendly. The music was kind of loud, that makes people to talk louder so that they can hear themselves. So, it got pretty loud in there. We had a nice light dinner here, if we are in the area, I would like to try other dishes from their...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreSo we decided to come to @harlempublic on a last-minute idea, and you knew the Bodegafatboys were gonna order something delicious. Anywho we've been here numerous amount of times and decided to feature one of our favorite places which is Harlem Public! The food here never disappoints portion sizes are great and the combinations they offer with these meals are slightly unheard of. (I'll give you an example of what I mean below) What I love about coming here with the crew everyone always leaves out here with a smile. I've never had one bad experience here at all great tasting food, cheap drinks! Despite eating here during a pandemic we have to deal with outdoor dining so mostly everything is served in a plastic solo to go Tupperware. It's unfortunate you won't get to see these beautiful dishes presented properly the way the chef intends you to see his creations. Overall regardless if it's in a too-go plastics food still tastes top notch and will always support this local business. . . . So here are the food menu items we ate before and what's in them. . . . . Maple butter fried š. Crispy fried thigh, brown sugar bacon NY cheddar, drippy egg on maple butter brioche.
