TL;DR: if you decide to go with patience to wait in line, get the Anthony Bourdain sandwich. Definitely wait until the social media influence dies down. ——————————- Decided to go on a mission to debunk. Waited on line for under an hour nearing their cut off for their first service. Experienced items being removed from low inventory to prepare specific menu items. Was able to order 3 items. The Anthony Bourdain, a Chicken Caesar (on a roll), and the B&W cookie.
Anthony Bourdain ($9) - honestly the best out the 3. It’s a simple recipe that is very comforting. Would buy again but wouldn’t wait on line unless I’m having the rare extreme cravings for one.
Chicken Caesar ($17) - Originally this sandwich is served on a wrap but I opted for a roll for personal preference. It’s…mediocre. Not phenomenal - it’s just a Caesar of cold chicken, greens and dressing. The sesame roll gave the texture that is missing from the croutons and actually was the best part. Needs a textural element (if you get the original listed item) and lacks flavor.
B&W Cookie ($3.50): an absolute joke. Straight to the bin. That’s a Madeline with frosting but the wrapping makes it look unrecognizable. Go get a real one from a different establishment.
The layout of the shop is a small takeout counter with roughly 6 people being seen for the operation. If they want to get better ratings: the speed and efficiency needs to be improved. Watching people’s food being prepared at the pace they are going (especially a chopped sandwich) felt painful slow. Wasn’t satisfied and...
Read moreI went here with my best friend today and honestly we were super excited as we are huge sandwich enthusiasts. We enter the relatively short line with the expectation of getting our lunch soon, yet to our surprise, it took us about 1 hour…for a sandwich. While I understand things can get busy, the wait felt a little long, and there wasn’t much communication from the staff during that time.
We enter the shop and to our dismay, a green tape is covered on the much anticipated Spicy Chicken sandwich. Unfortunately, I was not able to eat the other options due to dietary restrictions so I chose the curried chicken salad sandwich. So incredibly mid especially as someone who is very well-versed with curries —I simply felt defeated by the outcome. Because of the $17 I paid and the time we spent standing on Thompson street, I forced myself to enjoy it, as situations like such are bound to happen.
Finally, for a sweet treat, we opted for a black and white cookie, but it came as a Madeline with black and white frosting and resembled the taste of whole wheat bread. While it wasn’t exactly what I had in mind, I appreciate the effort to do something a little different, though I was hoping for a more classic version.
Overall, while this visit didn’t meet my expectations, I’m optimistic that it was just an off day. The menu seems somewhat promising, since a former chef from Michelin-starred Eleven Madison launched this restaurant, so I’m willing to giving Brown Bag another try in the far future — this is just my...
Read moreWaited in line starting at 11:45 so we could get the chopped cheese. Didn’t reach the counter until 12:30, and got my order at 1. This sandwich was so average that I wouldn’t come back even if there wasn’t a line, and I live across the street.
Ordered the chicken Caesar wrap—the cheese tasted super gritty, like I could feel every small crumble of Parmesan. A bit odd, and I’m a chicken Caesar enthusiast. The lemon was really overpowering as well. Not much else to say other than that Lenwich trumps this wrap all day.
Also ordered the spicy cutlet, which was over-breaded, and the meat-to-bread ratio was off. The cheese was eh, and the sauce didn’t have much flavor.
Finally, the chopped cheese. Wow, you can get a better chopped cheese at ANY deli in New York. There was BARELY any meat in this—it was literally ALL bread and the sauciest sandwich I have ever had in my life.
Bottom line: This is the most average sandwich shop I’ve ever been to. The chopped cheese was a complete disappointment. But if you like bread with a few meat crumbles drowned in sauce, then this is the spot for you.
There are so many great places around here that got social media hype before their opening and actually lived up to expectations—Hamburger America, even Pop Up Bagel, to be honest.
Not worth the wait, totally overhyped, and all these reviews are clearly from paid influencers. Again, I live across the street and was really hoping this would be a go-to spot, but what an utter...
