I was actually shocked the day I heard they opened a new location for "El Campeon De Los Pollos" (The Champion of Chickens for those who don't know Spanish) down 101st Avenue. So I decided to check the place out since I absolutely love the one down on Lefferts Blvd that's been feeding my family for nearly two decades and a half now. That's how long my family has loved their food, plus it's the only Dominican cuisine spot in the area at the time that serve food like grandma makes.
I have to say it though, this spot doesn't compare to the one on Lefferts Blvd if you ask me. You don't get the same amount of food. On the one on Lefferts, they pack your plate to the brim and muster the power of the lord Jesus Christ to make sure all that food fits in the aluminum plate, plastic bin, or the small plastic box. They even ask if you want more at times. Over here on 101st, they don't really that.
What makes it a little more depressing for me is how the rice is usually hard, kind of overcooked. I know some people prefer it that way but you can have that on the side--not with the rice everyone orders from. Sometimes that rice is kind of cold too, but it's by chance and not a constant thing mind you. The pernil (roast pork) they serve lacks some flavor and the meat is usually just the fat and gristle--lacking the meaty parts that you'd expect from a juicy pernil.
While it is still good food, it just lacks flavoring for me. Maybe that's just the cooks' way of making it or they're catering to the palate of the people of that specific area they're in. Their selection of desserts are above the one on Lefferts though, so I will give them that. Their french fries, while a basic side item, can be a hit or miss. Sometimes there's a funky stench from them which can definitely be unappetizing. Their fried chicken (Pollo Empanizado) isn't as juicy but definitely has a nice seasoning that differs from the other restaurant's.
Their Rotisserie Chicken, which the they're is known for, is just about the same. Just lacking a tiny bit in flavor too. Good food, but not what I'm usually used to. Hence the...
Read moreNew customer here. This restaurant was recommended by the JP auto people and it did not disappoint.
Context: The stars represent the real value of place, not to say the five star for food here compares with a 5 star Michelin rated establishment that cost 300 percent more.
I ordered half chicken half steak on Spanish rice with a country club Frambuesa Raspberry soda. The bill came to about 15 dollars with tip. They deserve more!
The food was delicious. Chicken was tender and marinated in a flavorful broth. The steak was similarly tender but had additional peppers and onions and other flavors that made it stand out. The rice was full of flavor and really could be it's own meal.
The service was exceptional and the woman at the front desk was very thoughtful and stepped through all the dishes they had to offer while giving great suggestions.
The atmosphere was good to. This is not a fine dining experience, but a local spot for and by locals. I could tell the people that team the business and the patrons of it were friendly and that created a really warm atmosphere.
I recommend you try this place out of you are even curious about Dominican and Spanish food or just want to support a...
Read moreI placed an order for delivery Saturday 09/14 for an order of ChicarrĂłn de Pollo sin Huesos con tostones and order of Camarones al Ajillo by itself. The fried chicken was very very salty and the shrimp was soaking in oil. Iâm only leaving this review because they need to dedicate more time in the kitchen. The person who handled my order was very polite and patiently answered the phone. Also the delivery driver who went above and beyond to deliver the food. You guys have potencial to do better and I only desire for you to be a...
