When I was a kid growing up in Brooklyn Heights, we used to come to Fascati's for the most amazing pizza; we would hang out and watch the crowded area behind the counter, and they would happily tolerate the crowds of happy kids from the local public and private schools. I can't say how often I burned my mouth because I couldn't wait to taste the next bite, no matter how hot it was. I've gone back many times over the years and have been thrilled that it has remained, basically, the same - sure, the exposed brick is a little fernier than it used to be, but the pizza? Astounding. Outstanding. perfectly thin but chewy crust, just the right amount of cheese over their delightful sauce. One of the best slices in NYC. Yesterday I returned and was utterly delighted to find that, not only had it not changed, but neither had the guy making the pie. When my wife told him what I just told you, he beamed ear to ear, and took especial pride as he handed over the to-go pie. We sat in the car and could not help but scarf down our slices. This morning, nursing a burned mouth, I have to say Fascati is one of the few places I can go and recreate - with total fidelity - my favorite childhood and...
Read moreThis place is not as famous as it's well known neighbor, you know the one, under the Brooklyn Bridge. But unlike their famous competition, you can get slices here. The slices are not thin and are not thick, they just right. The slice is crispy for most of the bites but subsides to chewiness towards the perfect golden crust, agian just right. The ratio of sauce and cheese is spot on, bubbling with nice amount browned and gooey spots of mozzarella. I love their simple menu, $3 cheese slices with $0.75 per topping. I like the pepperoni, they use the small thick kind here, the ones that turn in to tasty little cups. And all the slices come from a fresh pie. No glass case here filled with unending old pies. Cheese slices are ready to go, never more than a cheese pie or two behind the counter for freshness. Only need to heat slice to warm a custom topping. You can get a whole fresh pie as well, which I suggest for groups. I've never seen it too crowded here. But sorry locals this place is great and deserves...
Read moreFascati's is my neighborhood slice joint and I wish I was in a position to offer a more favorable review but it seems like they've shifted focus onto saving costs (which kills the quality)
Pros: Service is quick (its a slice joint), decor is very clean, and the staff is friendly.
Cons: Their pizzas don't cut it. Between the hard crust (unproofed dough), the bland cheese and sauce, and the cardinal sin of adding the pepperonis when reheating the slice (instead of when they cook the pie - to save money)
Pizza Score (8/20pts - POOR) Crust 1/5 - Too Dense and flavorless - tasted un-proofed. Cheese 2/5 - Nothing special. Just inexpensive mozz. Sauce 2/5 - Just very neutral - again, they're using cheap tomatoes without much spice or salt. Ratio 3/5 - The 3 ingredients were balanced - but the...
