I entered today on my graduation. I was with my family. We spent over $70 on desert (cookies for perspective, no cake or large items were purchased) . I asked for another box as the box was too full and I didn’t want the desserts to be squished and was told I could not have one. When I gave my reasons and asked why, the lady at the counter told me I couldn’t get a box because boxes have the store name. This comment was uncalled for and her attitude was unwelcoming and her tone felt accusatory and discriminatory. I have been going here for over 20 years. Never again. Do not waste your money or time to be made to feel as though your money doesn’t count. I even had my graduation cap on. I will never return or recommend anyone. It was a beautiful day of celebration. A bakery that charges SO MUCH MONEY FOR SUGAR AND FLOUR PRODUCTS. TAKE YOUR MONEY AND TIME ELSEWHERE DO NOT ENTER HERE, you will get treated poorly. Save your time and self respect. Disgusting, never again. Do better all you had to do was give a box, $75 dollars later and you can’t divide the products at the customers request. NYC is full of wonderful food that is better and much cheaper. I could have bought 2 cakes instead I got just a few cookies. Lesson learned. No one needs to be treated poorly or judged because of the color of their skin or otherwise. Your policies should serve not only the business but it should also serve the customers, if that is your intended audience. It was truly a horrible horrible horrible experience. Do yourself the favor. Go somewhere else. Less than 0 stars you shouldn’t own a bakery if this is how you treat people.............Thank you for your reply. I was displeased to be in that position. While discrimination may not be a part of your policy, that statement does not speak to what I experienced. While I understand the issues you have experienced in the past others should not pay the price for that situation, particularly when they are paying customers Additionally as to your point, please note, I explicitly asked the employee for another box, to distribute the goods amongst family. I even asked her to distribute the goods herself to ensure your product would be going into the box and sealed to avoid the issue you mentioned. It was a long standing family tradition to visit this bakery. I had not seen this individual in years, and they are now an elder and it was a lifetime tradition since their childhood. For those purchasing your goods particularly at the price point you sell at, I wanted this individual to know the product was coming from your establishment, it was within itself a part of the gift. If I wanted a brown bag, I would not have spent $70 I would have gone to the bodega and purchased a .50 cent cookie. I will not return, nor would I recommend the bakery to anyone regardless of their race. People may forget the words, but people do not forget how you make them feel. Particularly during this time, when we as the city of NY are finally being able to go back outside. This is a sad and unfortunate end to a long standing relationship. I will take my business elsewhere and recommend others do as well, why take the chance? The 1 star reviews, saying they wish they could leave 0 speak for themselves. So does the thread of consistent bad reviews throughout the years which repeat similar issues, likely the result of your inflexible policies. Once you know of a problem, perhaps you should fix it. How many people have to complain, before you make changes to the treatment of your customers. I should have checked instead of being nostalgic. If it looks like a duck, quack like a duck... you get it NY were...
Read moreI am disappointed to have to write this, however, my attempt to speak to a manager on two separate instances has gone has been ignored My family and I have been customers for years. However, our last two cannoli cakes we have ordered have not been up to par like they used to be. Last year we got a cake and it was pretty dry. I thought OK. Everybody has a bad day, overall they are always delicious. However, we just ordered one last month for my Mom's birthday and the same thing happened. Completely dry. We didn't finish it like we always do, not even our slices. It was a disappointment, especially because it was her 70th birthday and we had ranted and raved to relatives how they're about to try the best cannoli cake ever. Not to mention, I asked for a specific color for the writing and it was wrong, but I wasn't going to complain about that. I let it go until we tasted the cake. I had written a kind email explaining the situation hoping at least for their own good they would be more conscientious, so this doesn't happen again for any other customer. They never got back. Two weeks later I called because I wanted to speak to a manager because I didn't want to stop going there, however, I did not want to continue patronizing them if they could not respond to a customer's email. The girl I spoke with was very kind and apologetic though of course not her fault. She said a manager would get back to me that evening. I explained to her it was my son's birthday the next day, and I would still like to order a cake if this can be rectified. Still no response from management, so for that reason I am leaving this feedback. It's not even about the product. It's about customer service. As a business owner myself, I would never have let this happen. So my family and I will no longer be customers of Fortunato's. What a shame. Like I said, their cake used to be amazing, but clearly that is not the case anymore, nor is their...
Read moreCame here after a company holiday dinner with multiple staff members (total of 8 people) to get some coffee and pastries. The wait was short, the woman helping us was very pleasant, and we quickly received our box of pastries and multiple coffees. We saw some patrons sitting in the back seating area enjoying a coffee and decided to grab a few chairs at the front of the store to finish our coffee while we waited for our ubers. I will preface by saying it was the holiday season, and the staff was working on putting together nice looking gift baskets, which they were setting up on tables. A tall gentleman (maybe the owner?) holding a gift basket told us very abruptly "NOPE, CAN'T SIT HERE" as he was organizing his orders. No problem. No one in our party sat down at the tables, nor were we loud, rude, or disrespectful in any manor. We did open our box of pastries, and were sipping our coffee (standing up), again - while waiting for our rides. The gentleman then looks over at our party again and says "GUYS, LISTEN I TOLD YOU ONCE ALREADY THERE IS NO SEATING OVER HERE, ITS A LITTLE DISRESPECTFUL NOW". Disrespectful? Sir, disrespectful is speaking to paying customers in that manor - we easily spent over $100, the least you could do is let us stand up eating your dry tiramisu & sludge espresso. Clearly this situation was upsetting, and made two of the members of our party extremely uncomfortable. I own businesses myself, and would never think of speaking to a paying customer in this way. All of this aside, the pastries are extremely overrated. I could name 50 shops better than Fortunato but there is no need - have your pick. There is nothing special about any of the pastries, nor the coffee, and clearly not the service. Steer clear, unless you love being disrespected, and enjoy a bitter,...
