We wanted to find somewhere near 55th street, and Karahi Indian Cuisine looked ideal. On arrival we sat down in a very pleasant and not too noisy restaurant with water at the ready and two colorful menus.
I asked if they could do a Madras and the chef said he could make one. It was amazing. They read me perfectly, hot, but not too hot. And the flavour, it was delicious. Real care and original. Maybe a cliche, but certainly the most pleasant and enjoyable madras I've had. Maybe a New York flare? Maybe just authentic. But definitely an excellent meal. As for my colleague, he went for the mixed grill, and that, too was something special, lamb, shrimp, chicken, big chunks and beautifully presented. Luckily for me, my friend doesn't have as large appetite as I so I had some of his chicken and he was stuffed. I'm full too. The portions were really good. And we were asked if we wanted more rice, but even I don't think I could have had anymore. The staff were really friendly and genuinely interested in our enjoyment.
We both had Naans, I had a peshwari, and it was lovely. As we were going to a show, we didn't have time for dessert, but did stay for a little time. No pressure and just enjoyed a little rest. The food came in good time, maybe 10 minutes. They are really well set up.
Would fully recommend. Quality, tradition and passion would describe Karahi...
Read moreI was in the city and hungry, usually I have something from the Original Soup Kitchen but I decided to venture over a couple of blocks to 9th Ave in search of something tasty. I walked by a couple of Indian Restaurants, and after debating on which one, my gut told me to try the smaller cozier one. I'm glad I did.
I sat in the window and and looked over the menu. A gentleman approached me and introduced himself as Rajiv and asked me what I would like. Not long after that I had "Chicken Tikka Masala" with some rice, some garlic naan, and a King Fisher beer occupying the space in front of me.
The Tikka Masala was the best I have ever had, the sauce was spicy and flavorful, and the naan melted in my mouth. I was really in a little slice of heaven after a busy day walking around New York. I could only eat half of what was in front of me, as previous to my meal I was given some lentil crackers (I think) with two different chutneys, tamarind and coriander, very tasty.
Rajiv gave me a couple of containers to bring home my rice/naan and Tikki. But not before he gave me a nice plate of fruit to cleanse my palate. We spoke for a little bit, and I can tell Rajiv loves his customers and he loves seeing them happy. I will be back soon. Thank you for a wonderful meal and...
Read moreWe were staying in midtown and walked over to 9th avenue where there are so many interesting and reasonably priced restaurants, and stopped in here because the menu offered things we like. While the restaurant is relatively small and had a fair number of diners, it had a relaxed, calming feel to it. The prices are fair, the portions generous, and the cooking superb. Each dish had its own character -- not the muddled cuisine of some restaurants. We started with the tandoori appetizer, which quite frankly could have served the two of us for dinner had we been eating lightly. Interestingly, while we would usually order noon or paratha, the owner anticipated us and advised us not to order bread because we had enough -- and he was right. The meat tandoori had a good variety, including traditional chicken chunks, a more lightly marinated chicken breast, and seekh kebab. We then had the keema curry with minced lamb and Goan salmon. Both were well seasoned, medium spicy. Notably the salmon we still juicy and not overcooked (which is sadly often the case when salmon is stewed). No room for dessert, but the...
