We checked out one of the popular Mexican restaurant in Washington Heights, Las Palmas. The interesting story behind them is that they used to be a bodega with a small kitchen until a few years ago. When people kept coming back for food, instead of their merchandise, they decided to go full-on restaurant. Smart move. Now they are one of the very popular Mexican restaurants in the neighborhood.
Their complimentary chips and salsa were different from what I usually see at other Mexican restaurants. The "salsa" was more like a sauce, since it did not contain any solid thing like diced tomato, and were really spicy!!! You would want to have a glass of water in your hand before you dig in. The chips are definitely home made, felt a bit thicker and harder than some other chips I have tried at other places. It was still pretty good.
We ordered their tacos, which are $9 for three, and you can mix and match what kind of tacos you want. Which is really great, because you can try three different flavors, instead of getting three of the same kind. I ordered Bistetc, Carne Enchilada, and Chorizo tacos. When they came out, it was nice portion and were all pretty good.
Thinking that we will need more than just three tacos each, we also had ordered Camarones a la Mexicana at the beginning. Now that we know how satisfying these tacos are, we probably will not do that in the future. This was really huge portion, a lot more than we expected. It was really tasty though!
Everything was fresh, tasty, and the staff were very nice. They spoke a little English, but they communicate with you better if you speak to them in Spanish. The service was not fast, but we were not in a hurry so that was not any issue to us. Read my full review of this restaurant and food on my food blog,...
Read moreAtmosphere: 5/5 The restaurant is full of traditional references and vibrant colors, the music is good and is not too loud, which is really good to enjoy our food and maybe talk for moments while eating.
Service: 5/5 Service is amazing, our waitress was exceptional, really friendly, in a good mood and she was really active while serving others. They have a small bell, which is really nice instead of screaming around and, although I didn't see the kitchen, some moments when the curtains opened, I was able to see a bit and it seemed really clean and chefs were wearing appropriate clothes.
Entrance: 4/5 The door is quite difficult to use, while it's easy for people to go in and out, it's quite difficult if you have a baby stroller or use a wheelchair.
Food: 5/5 Fries were really good, and you can choose between the fries and beans with rice, I ordered shrimp quesadilla, which had some guacamole with it. My chaperone/mother ordered an enchiladas quesadilla. And my sister enjoyed the fries! Oh, and the champurrado was really good, and warmed the body. It was...
Read moreI have ordered from this restaurant multiple times and it was always good but the last time I ordered shrimp was mistakenly put in my food and I have a severe shellfish allergy. When my bf alerted them, the server gave him a hard time about switching it, then the server told the cooks to just pick out the shrimp and he told them no don’t do that because of the shellfish allergy. When we brought the food home, we found that they had left one shrimp in there by mistake and actually didn’t remake the order. We had to go back a third time and to be honest my lips still broke out with a slight reaction. Absolutely unacceptable, food allergies should be taken very seriously. I understand that people make mistakes but DO NOT give them the same order. We are not saying these things to be annoying, I would love to eat shrimp but unfortunately I cannot and break out with hives for weeks...
