Discriminatory against service dogs-
This place has always been a reminder that good Mexican food does exist in NYC. I’ve been a loyal customer and don't mind walking 40 minutes just to get here. A few weeks ago, I called to ask if I could bring my dog since it was freezing outside and was assured they were pet-friendly. I had no issues dining in for lunch with my dog that day.
However, I recently visited for dinner and had a completely different experience. A staff member who seemed to be pissed because he was eating by the bar and got interrupted, greeted me with, “Do you have an ID for the dog?” I explained that my dog is a service animal and informed him that it’s illegal to ask for certification or ID under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). He seemed dismissive, stating it had “always been the policy,” despite me dining there with my dog before. When I asked to speak to the manager, he claimed to have spoken to the owner and said that the owner said no. I told him again that he shouldn't be asking for an ID. There are only two questions he could ask me and I asked him to ask me those two questions but it seemed like he didn't know. He seemed like he had already made up his mind, it's either i give him and ID or I leave so I left feeling so frustrated and discriminated upon.
This was disappointing, especially since the restaurant had previously made me feel welcomed. The staff member clearly lacked proper training on ADA regulations, which could lead to serious consequences for the business.
Despite this frustrating encounter, I’ll likely return because of the food and mezcal margaritas. But I won't be going back as often anymore. That one staff member just ruined it for me and my plans that day. That said, I hope the management ensures all employees are trained on ADA compliance to prevent more instances of discrimination against customers like me. I will make sure that people like me who own an actual service dog and have an actual disability don't get discriminated again by this restaurant by sharing my story because of people who simply don't like dogs or just don't...
Read moreI’ve lived in Queens for the past 14 years and can’t believe I’ve never heard of this place—thank goodness for Yelp! It was a 100-degree day, and I was craving something cold and refreshing for dinner. I searched for ceviche in Elmhurst, and this was the first spot to pop up. After reading all the glowing reviews, I had to give it a try.
I went around 8:30 PM with two friends. Despite the place being pretty full, we were seated right away. The air conditioning was a lifesaver, and the restaurant had a nice open, beachy vibe. It honestly felt like we were sitting at a seaside bar and grill in Puerto Rico, complete with white plastic chairs that added to the laid-back atmosphere.
Now to the best part—the food. We ordered the Aguachile Mixto in green sauce, grilled shrimp, ceviche, fish tacos, octopus tacos, the Gobernador taco, and micheladas. Everything came out in under 10 minutes and was absolutely spectacular.
The Aguachile was packed with shrimp, fish, octopus, and cucumbers—everything was fresh and bursting with flavor. The green sauce had a perfect zesty lime kick. It came with crispy tortillas that you break up and use to scoop the aguachile—such a great touch. I absolutely loved this dish.
The grilled shrimp were cooked to perfection, split open and full of that smoky grilled flavor. A squeeze of lime made them even better! The Gobernador taco was another standout—loaded with fresh seafood, cheese, and a savory sauce that made it impossible to put down. The ceviche was generous, fresh, and just as delicious.
The micheladas? Easily some of the best I’ve ever had. Whatever they put on the rim of the glass was the perfect complement to the drink, and paired perfectly with the seafood. We all ended up ordering a second round.
Our server was attentive and friendly, checking in just enough to make sure we had everything we needed.
I didn’t expect this place to be this good, but it blew us away. It turned three hot, grumpy, and annoyed people into happy, full, and jolly ones by the end of the night. I’ll definitely be coming...
Read moreI had to host an important celebratory dinner with my close Mexican friends who are family. I researched carefully and decided to come to Mariscos El Submarino in the geographical vortex of Jackson Heights, Elmhurst and Corona. The neighborhood has a plethora of commercial spots and I am not one to eat out as much as I enjoy cooking at home. Further, it can be intimidating to choose an ethic restaurant for persons who know the culture given their heritage and deeply ingrained tastes and or gastronomic customs. My friends agreed with the reviews- there is no other place in the city that serves this sort of seafood that is typical of coastal Mexico. The octopus tacos featured the most tender meat I have ever tasted. The green aguachile was so good one member of the party asked for a spoon to finish the amazing liquid. I was so smitten I simply used the plate discreetly without any utensil and resolute epicurean conviction. The shrimp quesadilla was comfort food incarnate. The grilled shrimp were fascinating, not salty and you could sense the freshness, be it via the peel or head. Although my least favorite dish was the meat shrimp taco, it was still fine and did not taste like anything processed. Fabrizio was our charming and patient server and he went out of his way to make us feel comfortable. Although there are two other locations, I know going back to this one makes all the sense in the world. The high praised New York Times review was valid and this seafood place is an experience that needs to be undertaken. When you can taste the essence and freshness of the seafood that is not repletely covered in a plethora of salt or artificial sauces, you are fine. Bliss, health and good times peacefully coexist in the heart of Queens under the noisy 7 Train elevated...
