I found Mazzat almost on accident while walking from Red Hook to Prospect Heights. The storefront exudes an understated sophistication, which the interior matches. There’s nothing pretentious or gaudy in this restaurant. It’s all functional without being completely barebones or lacking aesthetic sense.
The wait staff are very friendly and professional. They pay attention to your table, offer tasteful advice and pairings, and aren’t overly pushy about anything.
I ordered a beefsteak tomato salad, a chicken wrap with fries, and a lemonade. The lemonade tasted very fresh, not drawn from preservatives at all—it had the tang characteristic of real lemonade. The salad was awesome. It had tomatoes, olives, cheese slices, and red onions, all doused in a nice olive oil and lemon mixture. The chicken wrap was solid, with juicy, high-quality chicken.
The fries were quite good too, certainly far above most basic fry options you get at diners or “faster” Mediterranean restaurants. They were crispy and seasoned, while also having no lingering oil or grease on them at all.
The waiter offered me a baklava for dessert, which I decided to go for. I’m definitely glad I did. It had a perfect pastry layer that was fluffy and crispy. The pistachio filling was awesome as well. This is the second-best baklava I’ve ever had honestly (the only one that beats it is at Finjan Coffee in San Diego).
Mazzat is an absolute need-to-try. If you’re in Brooklyn—heck, if you’re in Manhattan or Queens—you need to make it a point to try this...
Read moreWe started with a light and tart Sangria, and a housemade smooth flavorful hummus with grilled pitas and chips. I had forgotten what freshly made hummus tasted like. I can never go back to storebought again. I ordered the Shawarma, the shaved lamb was done to perfection. So moist and tender, it just melted in your mouth and the infusion of spices just stimulated my palate. The rice, was so unique, it was mixed with small shards of vermicelli. I added a tablespoon of tzatzike on top which only enhanced it more. The mixed green salad was delightful as well. We ordered and shared the chocolate mousse cake. Which was very tasty, but in hindsight I would have ordered the Baklava or Rice pudding since that was made in house. The servers were very attentive and they even made sure our water glasses were full. The portions were so generous, that I took home a small portion for lunch the next day! Unbelievable,,,, that I microwaved my leftovers and it was STILL tender and tasty. The ambiance it delightfu,l low lighting, comfortable booths and antique beams. Hopefully the above text motivates all of the folks who have yet to dine here, to make your reservation now. I give this restaurant a 5 star. When I visit Brooklyn again to see my family we are sure to dine here, again and again. They live right down the street and it's a short walk in a lovely...
Read moreCute spot on the corner. Quiet neighborhood. I walked there from my hotel and it was safe and cute around.
Nice menu, good service and wine, I order hummus to start and fresh fish. I asked for gluten free options for appetizers and confirmed it with my meal.
I asked there were any gf dessert options and she thought for a while. Then I asked if there was ice cream and I was given options and dove in the gooey chocolate. It was too gooey good. I asked half way through if it was gf? Waitress said she tried to find out but didn’t know. The bartender overheard me and went and looked. He found the ingredients and in fact it did have a small amount of gluten.
I’m traveled to town for a business meeting. I’m so severely allergic that usually my mental capacity is prohibited with gluten for a 12-16hr stretch after having it. Chest pains, blood vessels rupture and extreme fogginess & fatigue. Not trying to be dramatic but allergies are serious stuff.
Mazzat, please know you ingredients and take allergies serious. Thank you for looking and finding out but please know on the front end as this isn’t just a preference,...
