Before any description, let’s be clear about this: if you like, love, or are simply curious about Indian cuisine, Omar’s Indian Fine Cuisine should be at the top of your list.
I am visiting my daughter in Brooklyn and she suggested that we stop in. She had heard many positive comments about Omar’s and we just happened to be walking by it when I mentioned something about food.
On entering we were politely greeted, asked if we were dining in or having takeout. We chose to dine in and we were politely shown to a table, brought water, and menus. It should be noted that the staff are incredibly friendly, and if you need help with choosing something on the menu, I am confident that they will guide you well.
My co-diner ordered Chicken Vindaloo, of which I had more than a taste. She loved it, and so did I. It had the right balance of spicy tanginess. The sauce was so good that I couldn’t let the last spoonful go to waste. I had Mulligatawny Soup as a starter. It was deliciously spiced and, on a cold winter’s day it warmed up me as well as my tastebuds. I would have been satisfied with just that as far as flavor is concerned, but I was quite hungry and also ordered the Achari Aloo Begun (roasted smoked eggplant with potato in a spicy tangy sauce). Like my co-diner’s Chicken Vindaloo, the balance of spiciness and tanginess was exquisite. The roasting of the eggplant did not overpower the sauce, the sauce did not overpower the potato, and I could taste all the flavors.
We ended our meal with a taste of Firni. I must say that I was already going to give Omar’s five stars, but I wish I could add another one. It seemed as if a dozen flavors rained on our palates as we ate the sweet treat.
I love eating at different places but Omar’s Indian Fine Cuisine is going to have to be a place to stop in every time I come to Brooklyn,...
Read moreLast week, on February 08, 2023 (Wednesday), I went there with my friend for dinner around 5:30 PM. We 2 people ordered Goat Chettinad, Lamb Vindaloo, Salmon Steak/Kebab, Mullagatwany Soup, Mango Lassi and 3 Garlic Nans. We sadly found a hair in Goat Chettinad while eating and showed it to the waiter and he took it back to kitchen and when we were leaving end of the meal he gave it to us in a takeaway bag and it was just 2 pieces we saw at home. We didn’t get any refund or a full portion, probably he just packed exactly the same portion what we showed him and just took the hair away and put it in a container, that’s so upsetting.
Lamb Vindaloo was so tangy (sour) with too much tomato sauce and it was a very small portion for money.
Salmon was alright.
Soup was good.
Mango Lassi was great.
All 3 Garlic Nans were so soggy and raw. Maybe Tandoori Chef was in a rush, also before serving the waiter didn’t even check, we instantly showed it to the waiter and he admitted that and took the nan to show the chef and gave us just a piece of Garlic Nan when we were leaving after paying the whole bill. We didn’t even hear any sorry/apology from the staff. We both friends were so frustrated about the feast. And we had to pay the full price of the meal. The restaurant wasn’t even busy at all, it was just 1 person next to us eating.
Today we wanted to go there again for another try but stopped and went to a...
Read moreThis place is a gem. It may look no frills and there might be kids running around being kids during your meal but honestly that’s just a plus in my book - I love that this restaurant is immigrant family run and that I can literally see the multiple generations I’m supporting by eating here. The food here is delicious and presented beautifully, they bring out cloth napkins and silverware for you, and they are very nice and attentive. The shrimp biryani and garlic naan I had looked beautiful and tasted better, the samosas were decent (don’t understand the review that said they were too oily - I don’t like excess oil either but I could not see oil on them), and the lamb vindaloo is a real kicker. When our waiter saw us struggling with the spice level, he went and got raita for us without us asking and another waiter came out to personally see we were okay lol. Even the complimentary crisp bread (sorry, not sure what it’s called) and chutneys they gave us were beautiful and flavored well. I never noticed this spot before as it looks so nondescript on the outside but it deserves all the 5 star reviews. Intrigued to try their pizzas and bagels! Weird sure but this place’s Indian is legit, funky American menu additions aside, and I’m not opposed to the idea of chicken tikka...
