I walked into Petit Chou after dinner, late at night around 7PM. They say you first eat with your eyes, and Petit Chou definitely delivered. I was mesmerized by the desserts in the display, and had a lot of trouble choosing which ones to try. They obviously had a wider selection earlier, but because of how late I showed up, there were a few pastries that were sold out.
I ordered the Chocolate Supreme, Tropical Cake, Blueberry Pastry (cannot remember the name, apologies) and the Pear Danish.
I will admit, as a pastry fanatic, I went a little crazy ordering so much after just finishing dinner. The desserts were so beautiful I honestly could not help myself. I will say that I was only able to try the Chocolate Supreme right then and there in the shop, and everything else I ate for breakfast the next day.
Let’s get into the food!
The Chocolate Supreme lived up to it’s name. One bite into it and I was sent straight up to Chocolate heaven. I am going to highly highly recommend you to not eat this dessert alone. It is so rich, that you most likely will not be able to finish it on your own. Here is a breakdown of the layers in this Entremet from top to bottom (according to my taste buds):
Neutral Glaze - sweet glaze for the shine Dark Chocolate Mousse - it’s what forms the dome of the dessert Caramel Ganache - a flat inside layer, that contributes a nutty and bitter flavor to the dessert Dark Chocolate whipped ganache frills - I believe the beautiful wavy frills were not butter cream but rather whipped ganache based off of the texture, taste, and mouth feel. It helped boost the chocolate flavor without adding the heaviness of butter. Chocolate cake - Dark chocolate flavored cake layer, which I believe may have had some coffee added to enhance the flavor. Chocolate exterior - there was a ring of tempered chocolate around the round dessert.
The flavors were mindblowingly delicious. The extremely rich chocolate flavors can be felt through each layer of the dessert, enhanced the nutty flavors of the caramel and potential coffee in the cake. The dark chocolate helped balance the dessert a little, so it didn’t become overwhelmingly sweet. I rate it a 9.5/10, the only reason it’s not a perfect ten was because the caramel was a little too bitter for my tastes, I’m sure a lot of people would enjoy it, but personally the bitterness was very loud and distracted from the other flavors a little.
I tried the Blueberry dessert in the morning and it was delicious as well. The flakey pastry on the outside was made from a croissant style dough according to the person working there the night before. Extremely flakey and buttery, I was actually quite surprised since I had left it overnight. The inside had a yogurt filling, which was unique, and I cant quite decide if i’m in love with it or just surprised.
The pear danish was delicious too; it tasted like what you’d expect from a classic flakey and buttery danish. The pear filling was a surprise for me, though, because i’ve never had pear on a Danish and I was very intrigued. I was quite pleasantly surprised at how well the flavor combo played off each other, and I would highly recommend this to anyone wanting to try a new flavor of Danish.
Finally, the Tropical Danish. Not only was it beautiful, the flavors lived up to my expectations as well. The vanilla pastry cream was so light and sweet, and melted in my mouth. The croissant dough was filled with a coconut cream which was quite a nice surprise (because I didn’t read the label). It really drove home the concept of a “tropical” dessert. Finally, the pineapple and mango compote was delicious and tart, but I feel like it tasted more like sour Mango to me than a combo of pineapple and mango. It helped cut through the richness of the coconut cream, and helped balance the dessert well.
Overall, I think that Petit Chou is an outstanding pastry shop. Not only did they masterfully craft gorgeous desserts, they packed them with delicious flavors as well. I would totally recommend, and will be coming back to try some more...
Read moreWhat Brought Me Here: I came to the place because I saw a video of the croissant bacon egg and cheese sandwich (or how, they call it, the "breakfast sandwich) and thought it would be a good meal.
After seeing the video showcasing the food on Instagram, I thought the place was going to be a local diner or deli, but to my surprise, it turned out to be a bakery.
What I Ordered: Tres Leche Cake Croissant Bacon, Egg and Cheese ("Breakfast Sandwich")
I had gotten a few more items, but these were the ones I remember the most when I bought their food. My Take:
Overall, the food was great, and I'll definitely go there again to grab some more. In my own opinion and consideration, it's definitely a spot that I would go to if I'm around the area, but not a place that I'll go the extra distance to travel just to have. What I Hope They Update:
If they can, I would like them to update their website menu. It only shows some of the options they have at their establishment, and you'll miss out if you judge something based on what you don't see in person rather than checking it out from the...
Read moreMy oh my! This is a MUST-visit, MUCH-needed pastry spot in NYC! I can appreciate a few things from Petit Chou: (1) I love how things aren't overly sweet. You know when a pastry is loaded with synthetic flavors and the sugar just lingers in your mouth? You won't get that here because (2) everything is fresh and made in-house. The flavors all mesh beautifully and play well together.
Here's my take on it all:
Croissants: My top two recommendations are the "Jalapeño Cream Cheese with Everything Seasoning Knot" and the "Strawberry and Cheese Knot" which is stuffed with strawberry jam and cream cheese. Did you know these croissants are made fresh?!! Well you can sure taste the love and effort in these perfectly buttery and flaky tastes of heavens! Win win for the sweet and savory tooth! (and FREGGIN' genius, least to say!)
Cookies: For those who look for the perfect amount of soft and gooey, yet crunchy on the edge cookies, these are a must try. There isn't an overload of chocolate chips (which I prefer) but you get one with every bite.
Eclairs/Puffs: What a burst of flavors in your mouth! I love, love, love passionfruit... and the twist they added with blueberry is just phenomenal.
Staff: Only the best! Sweetest people in the world... Chef Bassim and Erica, you guys rock! Thank you for sharing your gifts to the world.
Location: EAST VILLAGE BABYY! Love how close it is to 14th Street too!! Train station is right at the corner. It's just the cutest little pastry shop to visit!
Hope this helps and...
