In spite of Covid, Theater for the New City is alive and well. We have gone the way of Streaming and Virtual performances since we had to close our doors due to the Corona Virus. We managed to air our first Virtual Lower East Side Festival over the Memorial Day Weekend. Next we streamed each weekend through August our Street Theater for this year... 'Liberty or Just Us and in between and each Thursday continuing to produce Theater for the New City- On Air. Program of new staged readings . We also did our First Virtual Halloween Ball which had over various 90 performers and groups/Bands/companies doing their works including F. Murray Abrams, Phoebe Legere, Penny Arcade, Everett Quinton and others. The most exciting performances ongoing since Early Nov. Has been utilizing our 'Garage' Theater The Chop Shop which has a gate that opens on East 10th Street between East 9th & 10th Streets. We have done Live Revues with various Life Acts every Saturday from 2-3. Have markings on side walk for being Socially distance and Masks made available if you do not have one. Has been very successful and following all guidelines and Audiences have been doing their best to comply as well. We just had this Saturday Dec. 19th, a Christmas Caroling Sing Along. Was quite wonderful. Check us out at our website: theaterforthenewcity.net All the above shows are still able to view. As long as the weather holds out. We Wii be performing our 'Open 'tho Shut' Revue each Saturday from 2-3 pm. Take care and Happy...

Get ready for the GOOD, BAD & UGLY!!!! GOOD * The theatre's staff were very friendly and helpful. Performers for this play were talented performers UGLY * Things started with the usual announcement turn phones off and No Filming. The guy in front of me started filming with his phone holding it above his head. This blocked my view. I let it go on for a good 5 minutes and then leaned forward and asked if he was going to do that the entire performance. He got really mad shushed me and told me to shut up he is the director who is ROBERT LIEBOWITZ in the program. I guess he was insulted I did not know who he was and I don't understand how that gives you a pass on being rude. There were 6 rows in this theatre and he sat in the middle of the 3rd row. Logic should tell you to go in the last row to film. Not a nice person and I will never support a show of his again. BAD * "The Christmas Express" only the title was good the story was not good and kind of insulted your intelligence. The props did not make sense and a young lady sat in one of the Santa sleds most of the performance. I think she was a stage hand. "Theatre" seats were very uncomfortable many were torn and dirty. The lobby needs a face lift at least a paint job but the art work was cool. ConclusionI will definitely give this theatre another try but not...

We came in from out of town with friends to see a production of Bread and Puppet. I know and love Bread and Puppet so I am very familiar with their work. However, the production that was promoted on the TFNC website was NOT what was presented. There was no notification that the presentation was changed we simply got a program minutes before the start. I won't go in to the details but it was unfortunately a very one-sided and mean spirited production...not the Bread and Puppet I remember. Additionally, the Theater staff didn't know what they were doing. We came in with printed tickets. At the door they said to go ahead in. At the seating they said we had to go back to the box office and exchanged our printed tickets for little red tickets. The whole experience was a...

This theatre is truly a pillar of the Lower East Side and of the wider theatre community. They always showcase such interesting and dynamic performances, and the space itself is super funky and full of amazing artwork. The main floor has a welcoming bar and a convenient box office, which makes the whole experience even better. I love seeing shows here and feel lucky to have watched friends perform and have their work produced on this stage. I’m especially a big fan of Melanie Maria Goodreaux-Fielder’s poetic Afro-futurist plays—can’t wait for her next one in November 2025!
