If you're looking for a quick bite to eat in the Clinton Hill/Fort Greene neighborhood, Pho You is your place. Just be mindful of what you order. Bahn mi, rolls, and lattes are good.
I was in the mood for Pho yesterday and googled what was near me. I've been to Lucy's a bunch of times and though I love their bahn mi's, I'm not the biggest fan of their modern style pho's.
Wanted to try a new spot and so here we are. I ordered their beef pho, tofu bahn mi, and their Taro Green Tea Latte. I ate half the tofu bahn mi before digging into the pho. While the flavors were there for the bahn mi, the tofu should have been fried a little more. It was too soft and squished out. I asked for extra cilantro but didn't see any difference with the extra I requested. The pho was inedible. It included 3 small pieces of beef that was the color of chicken. That was the first red flag. Pho should also have the following garnish: Cilantro sprigs, Thai basil springs, wedge of lime, sliced raw white or red onion, bean sprouts, sprinkle of green onion, side of hoisin sauce. This place only had the tiniest spring 2 small leaves of Thai basil. So that was the 2nd red flag. Pho broth is very specific. This broth was clear and translucent. When I tasted a spoonful, it tasted like water. No flavor at all. Even with me squeezing in the lime and tearing up the small leaves of basil. I asked the owner and he said it was chicken broth. But I tasted no chicken. Why are you using chicken broth for beef pho? The pho broth is simmered for hours using a special cloth bag of herbs & spices. Red flag #3. I was very hesitant about trying it t all bc it had no smell when I poured in the broth. It was the saddest looking Pho I have ever seen in my life. I asked the owner if he was sure the meat was beef and he assured me it was. I took a tiny bite and thew it away in a napkin. The "beef" tasted like it had freezer burn. Not good. I told the owner it wasn't supposed to look or taste like this. He offered me something else. I ended up getting the tofu rice meal instead (pho was more expensive but a few $), but I was happy to eat tofu after experiencing their meat. The tofu rice was not good either, but I needed to eat so I ate it. It has zero taste but salt. Usually Vietnamese Pho places uses Jasmin rice. I think this place just used regular long grain. No Jasmin rice taste and no coconut rice taste either. Would not oder their pho or rice dish again. Not worth the $13 for the pho or the $11 for the rice.
I spoke with the owner who told me their reviews online for the pho was pretty bad and they were still working on getting their pho right. So here is my review based on what I ate, ordered and knew from the owner. Don't put something on your menu if you don't know how to make it and have gotten only bad reviews. This place needs a lot of work on their menu items...subpar food that I would not pay to eat again. The only highlight of what I ordered was the last minute add of the Taro Green tea latte with almond milk. They use a powder for the taro and almond milk. Tasted a bit chemical bc of the powders, but drinkable. About half hr to 45ims later I felt very nauseous.
I want to go back to this place in a couple of months (they just opened) to see if it is any better. I support everyone who is trying to operate a small business restaurant and will give them another opportunity to get...
Read moreFirst and foremost what a genius name for a pho place. I ordered delivery and it arrived within like 20 mins which is a miracle considering I'm over a mile away from the restaurant!
beef pho was delicious, a nice sized serving, brooth was nice and light and the chopped fresh herbs in the brooth was a nice touch. I could have used another packet or 2 of hosion and sirracha so I'll know to order extra next time.
The summer rolls were nicely wrapped and really fresh and the peanut sauce was so good, not to sweet like some other places.
Thai tea was good but could have used a bit more tea flavor but it might have also just been a little watered down by the time I got it.
Overall a super delicious and filling meal for the pretty decent price of $25.87 before delivery fees and tips. I will definitely visit the actual restaurant soon and order from here...
Read moreGreat food, good price! Will be a regular spot for us :)
We live across the street and were thrilled when they opened - convenient, good price, etc. We tried them out the first week they opened and were not immediately wowed. They were very nice but the pho lacked flavor. We provided them with this feedback and what do you know, they have taken it and greatly improved!
We had delicious pho and rolls from them last night. The chicken Pho was the surprise winner, full of flavor! Not only does the food speak for itself but I’m always here for a company that listens to its customers!
