This will be a detailed review.
I was very excited to try this place and actually decided to take my parents here because we’ve been craving for variety in the Halal Food scene. So many halal restaurant owners, mainly of the older generation, lack creativity and simply want to copy what’s trending (offering their own mediocre/lazy twist to this), rather than experimenting on newer endeavors that people would gladly welcome. This line of thinking from them has allowed for the NYC/LI Halal food scene to lag behind all the other culinary options in literally the food capital of the world and it’s a damn shame. There’s been a breath of fresh air recently, but still, we are lacking as compared to places like Dubai, Toronto, Dearborn, Chicago, Houston, and Dallas where going there makes you realize just how much more potential the halal food scene here has. Since the owner here is experimenting and trying something different, we respect/appreciate the effort, and so, that’s why I literally took the over 2 hour drive here to support the business.
Got here after dealing with insane traffic and went to place an order for 6 “Spudz” (it’s a takeout location, so no seating really)…unfortunately, they told me they had run out. They informed me that if I still wanted to order, I’d have to wait about 30 mins. I was fine with that, so I placed the order and decided to wait. Sadly, the wait ended up being far longer than 30 mins. Ended up taking a little over an hour for me to get the potatoes. Not going to lie, the delay was far too long, especially with no line there. It got to the point where my parents were getting so incredibly frustrated, they kept calling me telling me to just cancel the order…instead of throwing a fit over it, I chalked it up to me not placing the order online/it being a newer opening, so I exercised patience and tolerated the wait. Once the order was complete, chef/owner offered a basic apology, handed me the order and then I left…one suggestion I have to make is that in an instance like that, to build a good cache with a customer that clearly got the short end of the stick, maybe offer a beverage or something as a way of making the apology more sincere? Think it’s a noteworthy suggestion. For those who plan on going here, definitely think you order ahead online so you don’t have to potentially deal with a wait like I had. It ain’t fun standing for over an hour when there isn’t a line lol.
Now to the food. Got 3 Korean Chicken, 1 Philly, 1 Shawarma, and 1 Syrian Beef Spud (forgot the exact name of it). Overall, I have to say that they were good. Taste wise, they were all very good imo. The issue I had however was with the Spudz all looking a bit different as compared to what was shown on HalalNYC’s page. On her page, she got a more loaded spud, more decorated/cheesy/saucy, and her Spudz were mixed as well as buttered. With my order, they were essentially just baked, cut open, and then an overall lesser amount of toppings, cheese & sauce were added up on top. That made me a bit disappointed tbh. But since I’m being fully transparent in this review, I won’t lie, it still wasn’t a deal breaker for me to where I’d say I wouldn’t come back. Even with the difference, it was still a very good meal. I’d have like to have gotten the same thing as what HalalNYC had gotten, but getting 85% ain’t that bad. Still, I’d hope the chef/owner see’s this review, takes it to heart, and tries to deliver that same quality/quantity as shown on HalalNYC’s page to all customers moving forward. Do that and you’ll have a repeating customer base for sure.
Final review I’ll give 4 stars bc albeit the disappointments, overall food still tasted good and fresh. There’s a level of appreciation I have for a unique endeavor like this, so I’m hoping that the restaurant gets more traction and with that things improve. We need more restaurateurs to experiment like this for the betterment of the halal scene here so I hope they get the business of others from the...
Read moreI like this place a lot, but there’s definitely room for improvement. I got the sujuk spud. It was reasonably flavorful, but I didn’t really taste the sujuk, and the garlic sauce topping didn’t come through at all. (It looked like there was just a tiny drizzle on top.) Left me wanting hot sauce to give it a bit more kick.
The egg on top was undercooked to the point that the whites were still runny. I like runny yolk, but runny whites are a little concerning. They weren’t busy and I was picking up, so it wasn’t like they were in a rush to get my order out. I guess they just didn’t notice.
I do really appreciate the clear gluten-free labeling.
Overall, it was a lot of good food for a fairly average price for the neighborhood. I’ll be back, but I hope they work on...
Read moreDo not order online. Do not order during the day. I have a severe allergy. The do not take notes. like actually. No area on uber eats. No phone number. The one No instagram response. I tried asking the delivery guy to make the request and not only did They refuse to simply not add avocado, they assured the delivery guy that I would be accommodated and chose to smear guacamole into all of the other ingredients. Making it inedible. All of this with a 13 dollar surcharge in delivery fees.
Below what I ordered…. Minus avocado…...
